I like his advise. We should of put the UN in their place a long time ago. Too late now I'm afraid.

The conversation concerned the decision to seat China. If you listen to the tape you'll hear Reagan first state how we should just get the blank out of the UN.

Later he lays out how we could show are disapproval. First call G. H. Bush back and let them stew for awhile. Then send him back but refuse to ever take part in another vote. Again good advice.

One ominous note in this tape though. You can hear Nixon talking with Reagan about a boiling over India/Pakistan situation about 4:15 into the tape.

The conversation continues with Reagan suggesting the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, former oilman-turned-congressman George Bush, send a signal to what Reagan called the "bums" in the international organization.

Reagan: [I]f you brought Mr. Bush back to Washington, to let them sweat for about 24 hours, as to what you were thinking of, and then if you went on television to the people of the United States and said that Mr. Bush was going back to the U.N., to participate in debate and discussion, to present our views and so forth, but he would not participate in any votes--that the United States would not vote and would not be bound by the votes of the U.N., because it is a debating society. You don't have to say that, but it is a debating society --

Nixon: Mm-hmm.

Reagan: And, and so we'd be there, our presence would be there. But we would just not participate in their votes. I think it would put those bums in the perspective they belong [sic].

Nixon: [Pause, then laughter] It sure would!

Nixon: "Moral bankruptcy" is a good term.

Nixon also assures Reagan the U.S. will defend Taiwan militarily.

Nixon: [T]his action does not affect at all our defense treaty and all that.

Reagan: No, I know.
