I have fond memories of growing up in Miami and wearing a military issue parka with a furry hood lining during one extremely cold Artic blast where the temperature dropped to the low 40's. Brrr.

mc, I think he meant it's 30 kilometers straight across the lake. But you're right that it's 90 miles by land from Buffalo to Toronto.

I've seen articles that say there's lake effect snow from Erie until it freezes over, because it's a reservior for heat and moisture to power snow storms like this. I think that the temperatures in November and December left a huge reservior this time, but it still took cold arctic air to complete the system. I'm not willing to call it global warming. I don't remember the summer being terribly hot, it's just that the warmer temperatures were maintained longer.

Ok, the Touristguy pic was classic!
As for myself, I'd like to request about 9-12 inches of snow for my part of North Carolina. We only get any decent snow about every 2-3 years, last measurable snow was 2 years ago. I want to go sledding wih my niece and nephew!

Yep. I lived at 1020 Elmwood, directly across from the Original Pano's and next to JP Bullfeathers. My picture is on the wall in the new Pano's. Or at least it was when I left 5.5 years ago.
Elmwood Ave was a lot of fun when I was a drunken college kid.
Also lived a few houses down from The Royal Phesant on Tremont.

Yes lake Erie should be at least partially frozen by now, when this started on the 24th mid lake water temperate were still 45 degress. and with a low stalled over SE Canada you had that WSW flow across the entire fetch of the lake..that with very cold temps a few thousand feet above the ground spells trouble.

And speaking of Hillary, I keep looking out expecting "our" (gasp) Senator to be out there shoveling snow (instead of what she usually shovels) to help us out.
Suggestion .... Dig a deep hole in the snow, invite Hillary over, distract Secret Service agents with hot chocolate and cookies, throw the good Senator into hole and cover quickly. When questioned, say she was kidnapped by PLO. (smiles)

I did not enjoy the snow 2 years ago here in Apex (outside Raleigh/Cary). My drive way is over 100' long and I didnt have a single shovel! Took me 2 days to clear my driveway using dustpans, tupperware lids, and baking sheets!

I hang out in that area TOOOOOOOOOOOOO many years ago to admit to..the "Royal Phesant" was there even then *grin*
It is still the spot for college kids to hang out

First time I was ever in the Royal Phesant was on my 21st Birthday, and I think I was the youngest person in there by at least 20 years.
I do miss the snow, but not enough to ever consider moving back. I much prefer year round golf.
We have just as many liberal democrats down here.

And here's a statistic given on radio a couple of hours ago: Buffalo area has had 22 BILLION pounds of snow dropped on it.
The latest weather report at 12:30 PM is that the storm is heading south of the city out to the foothills where the ski slopes are, and that it's going to LESSEN in snowfall. Also, the National Guard is on its way to Buffalo.
Also, our mayor (no...not MY mayor, I live outside the city) is vacationing in Albany. WBEN is making excuses all over the place for his not being here. Heck, he could have DRIVEN back here days ago. Yep, even with the thruway closed, he could have done it. It's clear all the way until about 50 miles from Buffalo, and WBEN is telling people what the workaround routes are.

We have good friends in Buffalo and have been trying to convince them to move to Texas. Maybe this will do it. ;-)
