"WWJD" is a pious platitude spewed by politically correct religious people (legalists).

You know. Those are the pharisical mentalities who love to "accuse others" of not measuring up to what God *requires* to "be pleasing in his sight".

You know. Those are the guilt-ridden elitists who project their guilt on others by trying to lay guilt-trips on them .... burdening them with burdens that they, themselves can't / won't, bear.

If people were capable of doing "what Jesus would do", and being "pleasing to God", he wouldn't have had to die for them so as to have HIS righteousness "imputed" to them.

Religion is for those who are afraid of going to hell.

Christianity is for those who have already been there.

A "Religious Christian" is an emotionally, and therefore spiritually, immature Christian.

Rooper, you sure have it all wrong. It is obvious that you cannot understand Christian theology and probably won't believe me when I tell you that you are entirely mistaken in your thinking.

Lie down, don't make any financial, personal, or emotional decisions while your mental processes are in such disarray

Isn't it funny how George Bush says his heart was opened up to Jesus, yet he had so many people executed in Texas?

You would think that Bush would not overlook the fact that Jesus was also put to death by the state.

Jesus was innocent of any crime, and hence was able to pay the price for the guilty.

Men executed by the state for deserving crimes are a completely different story. In fact, Jesus (AUTHOR of the bible, cough cough) said that the government is to wield the sword, punishing the wicked. The sword doesn't sound to me like a tool for "rehabilitation".

I hope you just for got your tag.

I'm opposed to capital punishment, not for moral reasons, but for the belief I have that 40, 50, 60, even 70 years in prison is a far worse fate.

That's assuming that hell isn't much much much worse...

God's laws REQUIRED the death penalty for some offenses. REQUIRED.

The only righteous act was to honor God's laws. Jesus not only honored God's laws, he fulfilled them. Therefore, Jesus would have been required to honor and support the proper application of capital punishment.

But, it's funny, is it not, that you don't understand that.

Maybe if this place wasn't so insular and defensive, your membership numbers would quadruple

Quality over quantity. Obviously our standards slipped this month.

I see from your posts on this thread that you are not really interested in serious discussion of the points raised by this article.

If you were, you would have responded head on to the points made by the other posters here showing the flawed premise and reasoning of this article.

The question is posed, what would Jesus do? Assuming for the sake of argument that the historical Jesus and the Jesus found in the Christian Bible are one and the same, the answer is exactly 100% opposite of what the author of this column would have us believe.

Even stronger, we are told by Jesus Himself in his own words what He WILL do to Osama Bin Laden, not what he would do, and what Jesus WILL do, (if he hasn't already) is a whole lot worse than anything George Bush can accomplish, even with the might and power of the U.S. Federal Government and a united citizenry behind him. For Jesus according to his own words is going to personally send Osama Bin Laden along with all others who do not believe in him to hell forever, "into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." Matt. 25:41.

Take for example John 5: 24-29: "I tell you the the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life. I tell you the truth, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so he has granted the Son to have life in himself. And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man. Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves wll hear his voice and come out - those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned."

As to the question of what would Jesus want George W. Bush to do, he would want him to exercise the responsibilities that he has been given in his office to use the power of the sword to protect his people and punish those who do wrong, like say murder thousands of innocent people.

Romans 13: 3-4: "For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is god's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of justice to bring punishment on the wrongdoer."

Thus, George W. Bush is in fact doing exactly what Jesus Christ wants him to do in using the power of his office, the power of the sword, in defending America from the threat of the terrorists and bringing them to justice.

From the public accounts of his faith, he realizes his duty, and understands it clearly. While I highly doubt you are of the character and mindset to allow yourself to be enlightened in these matters, I do thank God that Mr. Bush understands them much more clearly than yourself or the author of this column. Intellectual arrogance and intellectual laziness go hand in hand and together often take the quickest path to error, as your posts on this thread have demonstrated. I would advise you to take a different approach, if you want to get closer to finding truth.

In case no one has mentioned this, Texas has a commutation system similar to Massachusetts. A board of pardons reviews the case and makes a recommendation to the governor. The governor may accept the recommendation or not. In Texas, the governor may request a 30 day delay for another review, but he cannot make a commutation that was not recommended to him by the board.

The Texas governor has limited powers compared to other states.

Isn't it funny how liberals only invoke God to promote their pacifist, spineless cause?

Stephanie Salter is the worst liberal columnist at the discredited rag in marginalized San Francisco. She's never met a blood-covered abortionist she didn't like.

You are wrong about the person of Christ. To point out only one example, the pre-incarnate Christ, in one night, killed 185,000 Assyrians (2 Kings 19:35; Isaiah 37:36).

I have a friend who has a prophetic gift. He has a favorite saying. "When you claim to be speaking for G-d you had better be speaking for G-d. If G-d stops speaking, you need to stop speaking too."

It is dangerous to invoke the name of the LORD in vain.

Shalom.

According to the Roman Empire, what Jesus was doing was a capital offence.

Actually, not. Pilate admitted that he could see no crime that Jesus had committed. He had Jesus executed for political reasons.

Shalom.

I'm talking about Roman jurisprudence, not the Bible.

Are you claiming to know more about Roman Law in the first century than the then-Governor of Palestine?

Shalom.

Jesus was in favor of the death penalty. Just ask the two thieves that died with him.

While turning over the tables of the money changers in the Temple is not quite on the same scale as carpet bombing Afganistan, it has the same intent. Jesus was not gentile on evil doers.

Outstanding pun! If you did that on purpose, it was brilliant (and I mean that). Even if you did it accidentally it made me laugh.

Shalom.
