Since the war against terror started, polite British society has found an enemy to target. It's neither the Taliban nor al Qaeda, however -- it's the state of Israel and Jews in general.

I could scarcely believe what I had heard. Will Self (who claimed to be Jewish himself) was seeking to make the wider world aware of two things: first, that I was a Jew, and second, that therefore my views on Israel could be disregarded since Jews had double loyalties.

The problem with this question (as well as when applied to the U.S.) is that it assumes that the Israel and the UK or US could face-off in war, as the countries presently exist.

If the U.S. and Israel ever came to war, it would mean that the change in at least one, if not both, countries had been so large as to make that nation (or those nations) unrecognizable from how they exist today.

But as the question presently stands, it's rather like asking "Have you stopped beating your wife?" And just as fair.

That's like asking someone who has family in in another state if he'd be loyal to his own state if it were went to war against the former. In other words it is a moronic question with a jew-baiting component.

There is a difference between constructive criticism and blatant hatred and propaganda based disdain.

As this unfolds from the ambassador's comment to this latest "everyone hates me" whine, I am getting an Al Sharpton moment. I remember 1967 when High School kids like myself were in awe of Israeli Air Force pilots. What we are seeing here now is pathetic.

From what I've seen on this board, most "critics" of Israel are either motivated either by dislike for Jews (i.e. the jews control the media,etc, and are used by Mossad to spy on Americans) or by a grossly distored understanding of the middle east conflict.

European Jews don't have the Israeli Airforce to protect them. Naturally they are concerned when their neighbors revert to the language last heard 65 years ago.

Actually, my first loyalties lie with God, liberty, and my family. As long as the U.S. is a nation with a system of government, under which I can uphold those loyalties without undue burden, the U.S. is worth defending.

Good column. I used to look for her writing in the Sunday Times, but I haven't been able to find it lately. I thought this was due to the "reorganization" of the Sunday Times website, but this piece says she's now with the Daily Mail, so I'll look there. Most her stuff deals with family, crime, and education, and it's very good.
