The problem here is structural. The power to control the access to resources is too great to prevent corrupt interests from using the law to manipulate the economic value of producing assets. The poor schmucks who get out of college planning to "Save the Environment" quickly find out that the only employers that aren't laying everybody off are government agencies. The safety and security of a government job that is funded through discovery of continuing problems is a system that can be expected to run afoul of the law of unintended consequences.

There is an alternative to civic management of the environment.

BTW, something I have found interesting is Bush's choice of Gale Norton to head the Department of the Interior. She supposedly has strong libertarian leanings and has a record of pushing for the privatization of government-owned assets.(which ,in my mind, may or may not be a good thing--it's highly dependent upon how the privatization is structured.) What's interesting to note, though, is that she comes from a highly connected Denver law firm, mostly known for its ties to the Democratic Party. One of the principals of the law firm was one of the key defense attorneys in the Drexel Burnham Lambert case. The law firm is also heavily connected with land developers and the tourism industry.

Thanks for the link. I think that now would be a good time for a grassroots outcry, perhaps a lawsuit, which will bring the huge wast of money and property to the general public is the only way to go.

When all the countries involved in the Third Way movement openly endorsed and embraced environmental wacko-ism ( i.e.: Kyoto ) the politics and the policies became too deeply intertwined to be separated, except by force of well organized, well informed and dedicated public outcry.

I very much want to know what other "studies" this group of clowns participated in. Spotted owls? Klamath Falls suckerfish? Others? I want every study these people ever participated in reviewed. I want their names, and I want to know what environmental groups and policies they have been known to support. These people directly affect our lives. We have a RIGHT to know.

Remember, this scandal was tied up with an ELF terrorist attack, and that alone should be setting off HUGE amounts of lights and alarm bells in the public mind.
