Al Qaeda has named a Palestinian to be Osama bin Laden's sucessor in case the latter is arrested or killed, Russian news agency Ria-Novosti reported.
Quoting sources in Dubai, Ria-Novosti said Al-Qeada members fleeing Afghanistan have revealed this to Pakastani intelligence officers during interrogations.
The leadership of the terrorist outfit would pass over to Zain Al-Abedin Hasan, a 30-year-old Palestinian from Gaza Strip, in case of Bin Laden's death or arrest, Ria-Novosti reported.
Hasan has been based in Pershwar for the last few years, overseeing the recruitment and dispatch of mercenaries from different parts of the world to Afghanistan.
The Palestinian is accused of masterminding the terrorist attacks on citizens of western countries in Aman on New Year's eve in 2000, said Ria-Novosti.
UBL juniors may be unavailable, although MO has a dead senator, maybe a stiff can run al Qaeda too.

If you look back at the history of Islam, you'll recall that it was originally spread in a rapid war of conquest. Those were the glory days, and folks from the Middle East tend to have looonnggg memories. The terrorists are trying to retrace the past, as a means of spreading Islam again.
The problem is troops. Active terrorists number in the thousands, which isn't enough for a world conquest.
There are, however, about a billion Moslems worldwide. The problem is in finding a way to turn them into people willing to fight and die -- at the moment, most Moslems are content to stay peacably at home, raising their families and staying out of trouble.
The best way to turn them, is to make them feel like they have to fight. A few well-placed bombs in China, or a couple of planes in the US, might well be designed to provoke for the various governments into cracking down on Islam in general. The result is an us-vs.-them world -- sort of like the Palestinian refugee camps writ large.
Once they can do that, then the Islamic war can proceed.

How Middle Ages but unfortunately, I think you're right. Usama, son of great wealth, wishing to restore the *purity* of Saudi Arabia or whatever he calls it. Backwards people of a religion that always looks back to the Caliphate days, and not realizing that times aren't quite the same. Sept. 11th did wake us up to the danger we were trying so hard to ignore. Idiots, they all convinced themselves that it would work and allah would cover for them.
I think it's a mistake to discuss this in the past tense.
