The Battle of the Bulge began on this date in 1944. Taking advantage of foggy, rainy weather, Germany launched a great counter-offensive against the Allies in the French Ardennes Forest --- knowing the lousy conditions would minimize an aerial counterattack. The Nazis were able to penetrate 65 miles through Allied lines before being stopped.

I had an uncle there with Patton, 4th arm. I think. Very cold and Shermans against Tigers and Panthers, tough going. Just shows what Americans can do even when out numbered, outgunned, and taken by suprise. I salute the Battered Bastards of Bastonge.

I just returned from a beautiful service this morning at Wolfes Pond on Staten Island, New York, where a new monument was dedicated to those who fought in this very significant battle of WWII,where the U.S.lost over 19000 lives. I highly recommend a visit to this lovely site on Raritan Bay.
