Little girl in need of good thoughts and prayers

This is an e-mail that I recieved from my best friend in Texas, we served together in Turkey, and I love him dearly. One of his sons is named after me, and I am his daughters godfather.

This little girl needs all the good energy and prayers that you freepers can give her. She is in a world of hurt and it just breaks my heart that I can't be there in Texas for them at this trying time. Please read the following, I am leaving it totally unedited, I am hoping that by doing this, I am bringing as much energy to bear on this child as possible through all you wonderful freepers.

By now I'm sure everyone has heard all sorts of stories in all sorts of ways about my daughter and what we're going through right now! I had to come in tonight to take care of a few things around Cuero-way, and spend some time with my boys. What I went through today and the past few weeks I wouldn't wish on even the worst of enemies. Kathy is six years old for some of you who may not know us to well. She came down with a strange and so far, unknown virus the week of Thanksgiving. She's had vomiting, excrussive headaches, back, neck, & leg aches. We have been to San Antonio to a specialist and he performed an endoscopy on her last week to find that her throat, stomach, and intestines were full of ulcers. Saturday night she had stroke like symptoms and was transported to Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi where she spent a few days in PICU. We were moved onto the floor in a regular room day before last. She has had initially the endoscopy and bi-opsies of her stomach and small intestine, a cat scan, mri/mra, two spinal taps (the second today), more sticks and pokes with the needle than a swarm of bees could give ya! So forth and so on... We are still in the fog about what is going on, they have brought in an infectious disease specialist to help, with his team, find out what is going on. Her white blood count is very high, she has pressure on the brain, her optic nerves in both eyes are swollen, the eeg showed abnormal brain waves on the left side of her brain and now they have ordered the second mri/mra series on her and a new set of cultures. The best we could get out of this new Dr. today was she has a fungus type of meningitis. It will take several days for him to determine which strand of the virus it is. Supposed to be hundreds of different types. Anyway, so we are still not certain as to the why's and what for's yet. The wait and watching her suffer are a tremendous stress, to be so helpless in a situation which we can only give to God and pray about! I wanted you to hear it straight from me and right now that is the best and most I can tell you all. She is in room 705 at Driscoll Children's Hospital in Corpus Christi, TX. Keep us in your prayers -friends! God is the most awesome healing power and I have faith we will get to the bottom of this and get her treated and back on her feet. Fungal infections are so mysterious in these cases. They have such severe effects once they take hold of someone, so different from bacterial or viral infections. I imagine that her family is just as puzzled by this as anyone else would be. I had a cousin who was plagued by fungal infection for a few years. A very frightening and strange sort of illness.

This girl certainly has my sympathy and best wishes. I hope they can determine the proper treatment and get her home for Christmas. What a terrible ordeal for her and her family.

This is not going to turn into a theological discussion, you can believe what you want, but as far as I am concerned all the positive prayer, thoughts and love from EVERY human being, no matter what thier belief will help this little girl. I want as many people thinking about her, feeling for her, and praying for her as I can possibly get. No matter what thier religious preference is!!

I thank you all so much, you're prayers are touching and helpful, not only for my goddaughter, but for her family as well. I appreciate it more then you'll ever know.

fungal infections...there is a guy in TX, Dallas, maybe, named Doug Kauffman. Used to have a website old fungus site

He worked with WHO on researching fungus diseases. He had a radio program, don't know if he still does. He is not an MD, but maybe he knows some who have experience. Fungal diseases have been given short shrift in US Med schools in past 50 years, so few MDs are familiar with them.

If I can, I'll look for something that can connect to him, besides, it will keep this bumped.

OTOH, the docs working with Kathy may not like him, since his ideas used to be quite radical, although lately research is bearing them out.

Serious fungal infection is very serious, very frightening. And so few of us know anything about it that, when it happens to someone we know, we're completely baffled. Somehow, it's hard to believe that someone has been brought right up to death's door by a fungus. Very often, it happens as it did to this young girl. One day the person is healthy and only a few days later is deathly ill with strange multiple medical problems that can't be treated with conventional means.
