Wife of Flight 93 Hero Gets Cold Shoulder from 9/11 Charities

Three months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wife of Flight 93 hero Jeremy Glick is struggling to make ends meet, since an array of charities created to help 9/11 victims have given her the brush off because of a technicality.

Lyzabeth Glick tells the New York Daily News that the national United Way hasn't been much help, telling her recently, "(your husband) was not in the World Trade Center, we're not giving you any funds."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also gave Mrs. Glick and her two children the cold shoulder, explaining, "We're not giving any money to Flight 93 victims."

Even a promise from singer Kristy Jackson, who recorded "Little Did She Know" as a tribute to Jeremy Glick with an eye towards donating the proceeds to victims' families, hasn't panned out. Mrs. Glick says she has yet to see a cent from the song.

She, her young daughter and five-month-old son were at the White House Tuesday to commemorate the three month anniversary of the attacks, where they heard President Bush honoring the husband and father as "one of the heroes of Sept. 11" whose "courage may have saved the White House" when he and fellow Flight 93 passengers foiled the plans of the kamikaze hijackers at the cost of their own lives.

But her husband's hero status hasn't meant much in terms getting some of the money donated to 9/11 victims. After collecting a mere $5,000 from her local United Way and $25,000 from the Red Cross, she's now all tapped out.

With charity after charity giving Mrs. Glick the runaround, she now hopes to find a teaching job to keep the bank from foreclosing on her home.

This is outrageous! The big charities have really shown their true ugly faces in the aftermath of these attacks.

PAGING BILL O'REILLY!!!

Maybe the United Way and the Red Cross should be boycotted until they die, and some new charities could take over their functions.

I too have wondered about the life insurance these poor folks would have had, but it occurred to me that some policies are void if death results from an act of war or terrorism.

Hmmm. I thought that insurance companies were going to pay all policies, regardless of that language...

I know Kristy Jackson personally; I would drop over dead if she gives one dime; she still owes MY husband money from ten years ago.

I agree that the families of the victims of the attack on the Pentagon and of the victims on the attack on Flight 93 should share in whatever funds are available for the victims of 9/11. However, I would like to ask two questions. Who thinks Jeremy Click earned $10,000/month? And why is his wife "tapped out" after three months when she received $30,000? There is something about these victim stories that don't add up. These people lost a family member, they didn't win the lottery.

The United Way gives the wife of this victim the cold shoulder because he wasn't in the WTC?

Yet, aren't they the same people who are giving grant money to lawyers representing terrorists?

I'm sorry, but how were those terrorists in the WTC? I think they were about as far away from lower Manhattan as they could possibly get on 9/11.

I wonder how large were the bonuses the heads of those charities voted themselves with money they received because of 9/11?

If it is true that the insurance companies are paying out 'regardless' I am puzzled why so many of the victims' families are in such a bad way financially. One would think that at least their mortgages would be paid off.

I don't recall where Jeremy Glick worked, but most employers have life insurance. If he was on business he should get worker's comp. too, I believe. Also, he probably had a retirement and/or 401K fund. Mrs. Glick needs to contact his employer immediately!! I know for years 'they' have been telling women to be aware of family finances to they don't get left out like this when their spouse dies. She should IMMEDIATELY go to her local Social Security office. She should be eligible for survivor benefits for her and her children. With these funds she is entitled to secure, she won't have to spin her wheels with the charities, which do seem to focus on the WTC survivors. I am so sorry though that nobody has told her that she is eligible for these benefits, etc. Maybe somebody in homeland security could be like a 'social worker' for the victims. I don't mean like Big Brother, but in a true way to help. (I know, I know, the old saying: I'm from the govt. and here to help). I heard on the radio today a widow of a WTC victim killed herself in grief. It said family/friends had been trying to get her into grief counseling but she refused to go. Well, I couldn't help but think she was in the financial dark like Mrs. Glick and probably didn't know what to do for money either! I mean, I read somewhere that the WTC list is down to 3,000 missing, then the people in the Pentagon is under 500 dead, I believe, and in Pennsylvania the people on the plane are dead. I would guess under 4,000 missing/dead. (A terrible number of course) but if someone in Homeland Security or whatever could get a list together of widows/widowers and perhaps go down the list and make sure each family had filed for their Social Security survivor benefits, etc. I don't know, maybe the government doesn't want them to apply? I feel so sorry for Mrs. Glick that she hasn't been told she is eligible for Social Security, etc.

F'ing BS! Because he wasn't at the WTC? Who the hell do they think they are?

We gave to the victims, we did NOT specify that they HAD to be from the WTC!!

No, they didn't win the lottery.

But it's pretty damn clear that the donations that these big charities received were intended precisely for victims like this lady.

Not for "tolerance programs" and not for Islamic studies grants.

You may not be comfortable with the families of the victims receiving much money from these charities, but I believe 99.9% of the donors would disagree with you.

Does anyone know of a means to give money directly to the family/families without having to go through a "charity" intermediary?

I share your curiousity that 30K isn't enough for immediate needs. I'm sure there is more to the story, and it needs to be told. As for the charities not treating all the victims of 9-11 the same, that doesn't make sense.

Sure, look up the address of a victim's family on the web and mail them a check! Other than that, you may be out of luck.

Glick was a sales manager for an internet company. He was only 31. I doubt he'd built up much of a 401K, and his salary might have been heavily pegged to how much business he brought in.

Who knows what kind of benefits he had...
