Wife of Flight 93 Hero Gets Cold Shoulder from 9/11 Charities

Three months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the wife of Flight 93 hero Jeremy Glick is struggling to make ends meet, since an array of charities created to help 9/11 victims have given her the brush off because of a technicality.

Lyzabeth Glick tells the New York Daily News that the national United Way hasn't been much help, telling her recently, "(your husband) was not in the World Trade Center, we're not giving you any funds."

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also gave Mrs. Glick and her two children the cold shoulder, explaining, "We're not giving any money to Flight 93 victims."

Even a promise from singer Kristy Jackson, who recorded "Little Did She Know" as a tribute to Jeremy Glick with an eye towards donating the proceeds to victims' families, hasn't panned out. Mrs. Glick says she has yet to see a cent from the song.

She, her young daughter and five-month-old son were at the White House Tuesday to commemorate the three month anniversary of the attacks, where they heard President Bush honoring the husband and father as "one of the heroes of Sept. 11" whose "courage may have saved the White House" when he and fellow Flight 93 passengers foiled the plans of the kamikaze hijackers at the cost of their own lives.

But her husband's hero status hasn't meant much in terms getting some of the money donated to 9/11 victims. After collecting a mere $5,000 from her local United Way and $25,000 from the Red Cross, she's now all tapped out.

With charity after charity giving Mrs. Glick the runaround, she now hopes to find a teaching job to keep the bank from foreclosing on her home.

Excellent point. I can understand that some of the money was donated to specific groups, ie the firemen and the police...but does anyone have any idea why FEMA would deny assistance to the families of the victims of Flight 93?

I agree with Howlin and JD86. I have a great deal of sympathy, and have grieved, for this woman and her children, and for all of those who lost family members at WTC or on the airplanes. That doesn't translate to believing that the survivors are not responsible for their own living expenses. There was a time in our history when we didn't expect everyone else to take care of us. We all should plan ahead, especially if we have young children. Poor planning on someone else's part does not require that the rest of us foot the bill for his survivors' living expenses forever.

Most men only provide for a get-on-your feet period, anyway. I think the charities have enough of our $$$ to do more, and they ought to, and for flight 93 in particular.

I'm saying the heroes of that flight deserve our help providing for their families, and if we can make it so that income for his expected lifetime is replaced, I'd be proud to do it.

The 9-11 Fund was established to assist the families of the massacres of 9-11. Flight 93 was a part of that massacre as were the those murdered in the Pentagon massacre. These charities need to be dismantled, they are obviously incompetent.

There's a talk radio guy here in Tampa who did a radio fund raiser for a family from here who lost the husband/father serving at the Pentagon. In just a couple of hours, the listeners gave about $30,000.00, then one man called in and said he'd match that. They also had a golf tournament for the family. All in all, they raised $90,000.00 for the family in one afternoon.

He was in the military so he's eligible for related benefits, and he undoubtedly had SGLI, but that doesn't go too far. No whining and moaning about the "charities", just down home people helping people.

I read the Airlines gave each family $25,000.00 after the crash. So, in addition to the 30 thousand, she also got that. People gave that money to go to the families of the people who were killed, it should go to them. The problem is people put their trust in the Red Cross and United Way. That is where they made their first mistake.

Good point on the FEMA reaction. You may be right. Also, FEMA is more for disaster relief...not a one time death benefit payor.
