BOB DOLE to LENO: "Osama wrote Clinton asking for a pardon..." [LIVE, if that can be said of Dole]
The Tonight Show [NBC]
| December 12, 2001
| Bob Dole, paraphrased
Posted on 12/12/2001 8:34:04 PM PST by Silly
Bob Dole just quipped to Jay Leno: "There's a rumor going around Washington that Osama bin Laden has written a letter to Clinton, asking for a pardon. I guess he doesn't know that Clinton isn't President anymore."
What a riot Bob Dole is! Did anyone else see the remark?

I'd like to have dinner with Bush, but I'd settle for lunch with Dole.
Still being,

I wish I had a transcript for you all, instead of having to rely on my own paraphrase.
It was pretty funny, and Leno had a good laugh.

I wonder if Dole has jokewriters or comes up with things himself :)

Thanks for the heads-up, I will watch tonight.

I get the impression he has a good sense of humor on his own. He can really zap some good one-liners.

Of course you were being Silly -- you know he is clever enough to throw off these quips easily on his own. What a funny guy.

Also, said that he fully expects to see Gore show up in one of those caves... AND he will - next SNL ...

Forget about the caves. Who do you think is in that green shipping crate? Bet the marines are having more fun than we thought!! They probably come by the window to dump in handfuls of chad. :) (Seems like such a long time ago, doesn't it?)

There's a rumor going around Washington that Osama bin Laden has written a letter to Clinton, asking for a pardon. I'd guess bin Laden's chances would depend on the size of his check. Clinton won't be deterred by that other little detail.

... and that Johnny Cochran wants to get a hold of the John Walker case so he can play the "Afghani Card." This is *truly* turning into an episode of "As the Worm Churns"!
LOL!

I remember back in '96, Letterman asked Dole why he was running for President. "Well, every country deserves a President," replied Dole.
His advisors had Dole rein in his humor during the '96 campaign. I don't know if it would've made any difference in the final result, but I still think it was one of the biggest mistakes of his campaign.

I'd guess bin Laden's chances would depend on the size of his check. If he offered Clinton 72 virgins, he might also have had a chance.

"Afghani Card." Okay, a little nit-picking is in order here:
A person from Afghanistan is an Afghan; the country's main unit of currency is the Afghani.
Not a big deal; just needed to set the record straight.

Chris Matthews made a similar comment about Rumsfeld on Hardball tonight as well. He also paid a compliment to another member of the administration, but I couldn't hear the whole thing (my husband kept blabbing which is a big mistake when I'm busy running the country from our living room).

So if you put a knitted blanket on a cold hound, would it be an Afghan wearing an afghan, or an Afghani wearing an afghani? And how many afghanis would you have to pay to buy an Afghan wearing an afghan?

If he offered Clinton 72 virgins, he might also have had a chance. Clintoon would have done it for two virgins.

the country's main unit of currency is the Afghani.... and that just happens to be Cochran's (or any shyster lawyer's) *favorite* card!
(The 'currency card', that is ...)
