TEN RULES OF A GUNFIGHT

1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two.

2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.

3. Only hits count.

4. If your shooting stance is good you 're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly.

5. Keep shooting until the threat no longer exists; then stay sharp until somebody with a badge tells you to freeze.

6. If you can choose what to bring to a gun fight, bring a long gun and a friend.

7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of calibre, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.

8. If you are not shooting you should be reloading or running.

9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependant on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun.

10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty

Clint Smith is DA MAN! (And he was before I read that, but is even more so now!)

Visited a gun club and shot a gun for the first time last night -- asked them what was the best thing to get for defense. Unanimous answer: a shotgun.

For in the home, there's nothing better than a pump shotgun. The sound of the slide being racked is one of the greatest criminal deterrents known to man, and if the crook isn't smart enough to run at that point, then he deserves whatever follows!

If the enemy is in range, so are you.

In range of the projectile, but not necessarily the BG's effective range. I can get chest hits out to 50 yards with my CCW weapon (Glock 19), but I doubt that most crooks (or most cops, for that matter) can hit at that range. Then again, I don't anticipate having to do that, but it's nice to know that it's available if needed.

I like Mr. Myagi's adive from "Karate Kid II":

"Best way no get hit is no be there."

Words to live by, literally.

Exactly!

"Fair fight" is truly an oxymoron. I intend to do what is necessary for my survival, WHATEVER that entails.

How ya been, amigo?

A friend of ours thinks her son, who is a SEAL, is in that picture. He would neither confirm nor deny his presence to his mom. Those guys are seriously tight-lipped! (good!)

Similar to #3, but to say it in a way that sometimes gets the attention of the spray and pray crowd:

You can't miss fast enough to win a gun fight.

Excellent Post!

Another good rule is to trust your gut feelings. The feeling may be wrong but it's better to be too cautious than to be dying or dead from not being cautious.

It's better to have a knife than nothing at all, but I would rather carry extra ammunition than a knife.

I would not underestimate a man with a knife either. A knife in the hands of someone who can use it may close and kill you before you even have a chance to get your gun out. Ballistic armor won't stop a knife unless you have trauma plate.

I've seen one of those little Spyderco knives go right through the titanium trauma plate in a Kevlar vest.

Also, your minimum safe distance from a person armed with a knife is approximately 21 feet. Anyone within that distance literally doesn't have time to draw a firearm, let alone fire one at an assailant.

My rule is if I see someone with a knife, shoot them as many times as necessary to stop them from moving.

Most people fantacize about hitting the winning home run in a world series or racing in the indy 500. Most people tend to outgrow these fantasies. Here on FR, we have grown men fantasizing about being in a gun fight. and not just one, but many. This is FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY. At least Geraldo is out there, actually in the arena ,all you cow pokes!

Just because he is a coward doesn't mean he can't fight. Always leave him an escape route.

Immediately came to mind: if he's a coward, and your friend was willing to let him escape, why was your friend fighting him in the first place?

Ditto to all your above.

Massive expenditure of sighted rounds always reduces the oppositions' "state of mind"...it never fails.

decent close range spread

Very close. I don't think pistol shot would make good defense ammo myself.

Great stuff, bro. The only thing I'd add is what Sean Connery said in The Untouchables, when explaining to Elliot Ness how to respond to Capone. He said something to the effect that if your opponent pulls a kinfe, you pull a gun. If they put one of yours in the hospital, you put five of his in the mourge. Good Stuff!

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho! Merry Christmas!

Shot shell are a poor choice for self defense as the pentration on them is very poor after a couple of feet. A good JHP is much better.

What do you call a guy who brings a box cutter to a daisy cutter fight?

I actually don't know exactly what caused the fight. The friend, (actually he was probably between a friend and an acquaintance) was an all-american corner back. He only weighed about 175lbs but was a vicious tackler. I fwould have rated him as about as tough a guy, pound for pound as I ever knew.

The guy he cornered was the equipment manager. This guy was about the same size but tried to avoid the fight. When it actually happened, the coward not only beat him (the defensive back had braces) but cut his mouth terribly. The fight was the talk of the campus for weeks. No one would have given the manager a snowball's chance, but like I said, just because he was a coward it didn't mean he couldn't fight.

Now that I think about it, it probably was unfair to call him a coward. He simply tried to avoid a fight.
