My netscape 4.75 browser back button returns to the top of the page rather than the area of post of the article. This browser works on other web pages. Does anyone know what causes this?

Thank you. I *did* read reply #56, but was too chicken to try it. So with your encouragement, I did it. IT WORKS! What a relief.

I feel like a real idiot. I went to your link, but I don't have Windoze. I have an iMac, Mac OS 8.6. I would like to download Netscape Communicator 4.79 for the Mac (I'm using 4.5), but I can't find it.
I spent twenty or more minutes searching, and now I'm getting really PO'd at netscape. They keep trying to shove 6.2 in my face.
Their seach functions stink. I know I'm not terribly bright, but I ain't stoopid. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. [/rant]

As many here know, I have a soft spot for MacHeads (especially those who 'fess up to needing help from the more knowledgeable)......so.....
Here's your link ;-)

Then turn off cookies under Internet Options. I use a lot of "secure" sites which won't let me access if I don't accept cookies.

Then go to "advanced" cookie settings and set it to prompt for cookie acceptance.

What a nice guy!

What can I say? A Mac user admitting he's an idiot is so refreshing. ;-)

Search the net for Pop-Up Stopper - it's a great little (free) stand alone program that stops those annoying little pop up windows. I love it. I use netscape 4.79 and it's okay - not great. When my Virus scan software is enabled to scan downloads and mail, it can take 2-4 minutes to download my email from the server - over a CABLE modem. When I find something I like better, I'll switch. IE is NOT better for me right now.

Netscape 6.2 takes 4 times longer to load than either IE 6.0 or Netscape 4.79. It is slow, but are you using the pre-loader ("Quick Launch") for 6.2?
That's partly why IE is so fast to open - 75% of it is loaded at bootup ;)

Then why does 4.79 Netscape load so quick? Gotcha...
To: Leroy S. Mort
Thanks, Leroy, it only took 45 minutes to download.
To: Fred Mertz
45 minutes? Only took about 5 minutes for the Windows version. ;-)

Who knows? That's the first thing I noticed about it - how long it took to load. I used to play games with it - I'd fire up Solitaire at the same time I launched the browser and see if I could beat it before Netscape was done loading. I wasn't
quite fast enough, but I came close a few times ;)
But, for my purposes, 6.2 is much faster at rendering pages than 4.78 was, so I'll take the tradeoff.
Maybe that's why it takes longer to load. Takes a lot of code to make an efficient program ;)

Same problem here with Netscape 4.77. Temporarily resolved by setting Free Republic preferences to "a new browser" which will open a new page to view the article. Easier to click on the "x" to close the article view than to hit the "back" and wait for all the article list to reload. When the article page closes, you will automatically be right at where you clicked to open the article view page.Nice idea. Works for me.
To: cootis
My Preferences is disabled. It shows that way even when I'm logged in. Do you have any idea what is going on? Shoot, I read FreeRepublic everyday and haven't seen anything where there is a problem with Preferences. That is where I set up my well, preferences, to open another window so when I finish with the open window/subject I return to the same place on FreeRepublic topics page I had open at that time. What gives? It is really annoying as I am sure you know.
