My netscape 4.75 browser back button returns to the top of the page rather than the area of post of the article. This browser works on other web pages. Does anyone know what causes this?

I will likely switch, but to mozilla, which I've been using on my solaris/linux/bsd systems for the last few months, rather than IE. I still like lynx. It's been ported to almost every platform including windows and I don't need a window manager to run it.

Mine is doing the same thing. I think it may have something to do with the CPAC banner code on the "latest posts" page, but I'm not positive. Started happening the same time that banner first appeared. I'll try to do some tests when I get a chance.

Net 6 WAS a dog, but Netscape 6.2 works fine. On both my computers here. Netscape 6.2 takes 4 times longer to load than either IE 6.0 or Netscape 4.79.

I spent about 10 minutes looking for 4.79 on Netscape's website w/o success. Do you have a link to the download?

That's the AOL in Netscape 6 for you - slower and uglier interface.

I use Netscape Communicator 4.7. I just started having this problem 2 or 3 days ago. Haven't changed any of my settings. It's a real pain.">
Same with me. Been driving me batty.
Happened just after the fund raiser. Hummmm?

I find alt-F4 much more effective. Ok, smartie...
I was just trying to provide you with a solution to your complaint about IE, which is now obvious you have no real interest in solving.

My Netscape 6.2 is working fine. They even have out their new themes for it. I'm using the "American" theme. Way cool. The "N" has been replaced by an American flag that waves when a page is loading. Red White & Blue ribbons represent links in the bookmark file.

I am using Communicator 4.79 and I am also having the same problem. I have noticed that the same thing happens on Ebay also. Returns back to the top of the page. A real pain.

Just a heads up.

I WAS using Netscape 4.76 and am having the same problem of returning to the top of the page. I upgraded to 4.79 and still have the same problem. You said your Netscape 6.2 was working. Does it return to the top of the page or back to where you were in the list of articles?
To: AFreeBird
Oh, one other thing. I forget, if I DO upgrade to Netscape 6.2 will I lose my bookmarks? *sigh* Thinking of having to go through THAT yet again.

Same problem here with Netscape 4.77. Temporarily resolved by setting Free Republic preferences to "a new browser" which will open a new page to view the article. Easier to click on the "x" to close the article view than to hit the "back" and wait for all the article list to reload. When the article page closes, you will automatically be right at where you clicked to open the article view page.

I'm not sure if it's still around but I played around with neoplanet a few years back and it worked pretty good, ironically enough it was loading over, and seemingly running faster than IE software which I still despise.
Running Net 4.72 is such a pain but it's the only one I can use at home running a cyrix 686. Net 6.2 sent my connection way to hell.

What the hell is Netscape???

Oh have a sense of humor. If it gets to the point that Netscape 4.x is no longer usable (which is approaching, it doesn't handle a lot of the new stuff well) I'll be very appreciative, though I'll find other things to complain about. One thing I learned long ago: I am not the kind of user MS designs for, I don't get along with any of their software it's all counter intuitive for me and generally annoying.

Well, first off, I'm assuming you're talking about say... hitting reply on a message composing and posting and then returning to where you where. I just tested that and it seemed to work fine for me(I usually open replies in a new window so I can copy & paste additional text from the original if I choose). If you're talking about reloading a page to see new messages and having it retain its current place on the page; that works fine too.
As for bookmarks, the NS6 install usually places its files in a seperate directory, not overwriting NS4.x. The bookmarks are still there, although, since its been a while since I've upgraded, I can't recall if I had to import them into the NS6 system or not. No I think NOT, since NS6 should still use the same "USER" directory where those files are stored. If you're paranoid, just make a copy of your "bookmark.htm" file in another subdirectory and once you've verified that the original is still there, you can delete the copy. Or not. Backups are always good things to have.
