Body of Baby Boy Found in Trash Bin.
Indianapolis Star ^ | 12/9/01 | Michael J. Rochon

A worker at a Far-Eastside coin-operated laundry peered inside a trash bin Saturday, hoping to spot a few empty pop cans.

Instead, the woman found the body of a newborn boy.

The infant had been wrapped in a sheet and several plastic shopping bags before being placed in a trash bag and then abandoned in the receptacle behind Laundry & Tanning Connection, 2128 N. Mitthoefer Road.

The umbilical cord was still attached to the infant's navel, indicating the child may have been born as a result of an unwanted pregnancy.

Marion County sheriff's homicide detectives have yet to determine whether the infant -- identified only as a white or Hispanic boy -- was stillborn or alive when he was prepared for discarding.

"That will make the difference as to whether this was a case of abandonment of a corpse or a homicide," said Marion County sheriff's Lt. Steve Gibbs. "We are going to take this seriously either way, that's for certain."

The body was discovered just after noon when the employee, whose name was not released, went outside to dump the store's trash.

A co-worker said the woman, who checks the trash bin for recyclable items, became suspicious of one bag because it appeared to be a different color than the ones used at the laundry and tanning business.

She opened the bag, and immediately called authorities after finding the body.

Investigators said they believe the baby was placed in the receptacle sometime Saturday morning.

Owner Michael Gilley was confident the child was not delivered inside his business.

"How the baby ended up in our Dumpster is a mystery to me," he said.

Gibbs said an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

"We won't have a suspect until we identify the baby," he said.

Meanwhile, investigators are urging people to report the names of women who were recently pregnant or have given birth within the past few days, but are now without their newborns. Throughout the day, several customers at the laundry expressed shock and dismay. Among them was Randall Spannuth, 20, who said the unidentified mother should have considered other options, such as adoption.

"This is so sick," he said. "There are some people who can't have children, you know? And for her to do this, well . . . that's just horrible

This story is very sad. Too bad the writer had to make the ludicrous comment above. How did he derive the mother's state of mind from the existence of the umbilical cord?

"'That will make the difference as to whether this was a case of abandonment of a corpse or a homicide,' said Marion County sheriff's Lt. Steve Gibbs."

Whatever the charge is, the woman will probably be able to plea-bargain it down to "practicing medicine without a license." </disgusted sarcasm>

If the umbillical cord is attached, it means the birth was very recent. No woman who wanted a child would discard it.

However, if the child was a few weeks old, it could have died a natural death (or been killed by the parents) and discarded. It may have been killed and discarded by someone other than the mother, who may have wanted it...

A common state of affairs when the law is so inconsistent, kill her yesterday it is an abortion, kill her today and it is murder, a day one way or the other should not make such a difference.

During the mid-eighties my family and I lived on the East side of Indianapolis. The area where the baby was found used to be a nice neighborhood but before we moved away in 1986 the area was a slum, full of Section Eight housing. Very few homeowners could sell their houses it was so bad. We put our kids into Christian school instead of the public school because they were still busing back then.

I don't doubt the child was unwanted. It's just not the place of the reporter to read an unknown, unidentified person's mind. It's the fact that the child was abandoned that implies he was unwanted, not the fact that the cord was still attached, though. Just a journalistic gripe from a newspaper reporter.

You're right. It was the subtle "hint hint" that since this kid was killed, we should allow "choice" i.e. for moms to kill a million kids a year with abortions.

I can see why the reporter wrote this, if the mother wanted the baby, she wouldn't have thrown him in the garbage, if someone else took the baby and killed him and threw him in the garbage, the mother would have reported a kidnapping. A wanted loved baby would have had a funeral and respectful burial of some kind. It sounds like another woman too lazy to use birth control and even too lazy to get an abortion.

Abortion leads to infanticide, once you justify killing a human for one reason, you can justify killing them for many other reasons. Maybe the mother first wanted the baby but changed her mind after he was born, the pro-abortion side would think this is only fair that the choice to destroy the baby be extended for some time after birth.

I have a feeling this reporter believes killing unwanted children, saving them from a life of unwantedness, is the right thing to do. Ugh.

Pretty soon, you will have to strangle your baby right in front of a district court judge before you can get convicted of manslaughter.

"In the early years of the twenty-first century America had sunk to such low levels of depravity that newborn babies were cast into garbage bins by their very mothers."

Yep. It's as if they think an unwanted child will remain an unwanted child forever instead of for just 16 or 18 years, or that there are no other couples hoping and praying for a call from an adoption agency.

Abortion inevitably leads to infanticide.

Baby killing is baby killing.

I say, let's protect all babies, from conception forward.

It is the most human thing any of us could ever do.

It is what Christ would do.

Writing Future History...

"By 2002, mothers killing their babies was so commonplace, it was no longer prosecuted"

"Feminists called it "the right to choose". Anyone who criticized the practice was jailed for daring to hold women accountable for their own actions."

According to the ideologues, Jesus wants us all to sit back and allow all sorts of evil, since God gave evildoers free will. They fail to acknowledge that voters have free will to vote in conservative politicians, and that conservative politicians have free will to pass conservative legislation, and that policemen have free will to enforce laws, and that judges have free will to try cases, and that juries have free will to pass judgments, and that bailiffs have free will to remand into custody, and that jailers have free will to punish. But you'd never hear the ideologues say that. According to them, only criminals and perverts have free will.

Very interesting point, rarely raised.

It is critical for ALL Christians to understand that God works through people.

Those of us moved to protect babies must be those people: actively, socially, politically, by every legal means necessary.

Those anti-baby people working on half of the Destroyer are very active.

We must match them and we must beat them.

"Let's roll!"

Well, at least they called him a BABY. In our dumpster baby dump in Fresno, the reporters called her a "full term female fetus". Here's the link to our dumpster baby:
