Church ought not to oppose condoms (Whine and cheese alert)
Mpls (red)Star Tribune ^ | 12/9/01 | Joe Selvaggio

On Dec. 4, the Star Tribune had an excellent editorial decrying the fact that AIDS-fighting condoms are being recycled because they are in short supply in African nations. The U.N. population fund estimates that $1 billion is needed and only $40 million gets funded. Millions of people are needlessly dying because of this shortage. The pope and bishops of the Roman Catholic Church should take a major share of responsibility for this loss of life.

For a minute there I thought someone had figured out how to manufacture condoms out of old wine and cheese.

While on the subject of inter-faith apologies, it's about time the Anti-Santa Defamation Leaguers bone up to offer one.

I don't object to someone's disagreeing with the Church's position on condoms. I object to his use of Catholic-bashing clichés rather than rational argument.

Unfortunately, yes I have.

And what about the men who didn't do anything like this? I mean the 95% or more? And while you are at it, what about the doctors, lawyers, accountants, plumbers, whatever, who have betrayed/cheated their clients?

One Priest is too many. The men are given absolute trust by their flock. The action of one reflects upon them all. How many Catholics now do not trust their young boys to be alone with Priests?

The first article link I posted believes this issue is a crises in the church. A crises not only in number but also in how the church is sweeping these cases under the carpet.

None of these professions have regular and trusted contact with small children. Doctors may have contact but it is generally not regular and the doctor is usually not alone with the kids. We are not talking about over charging for a pipe fitting, we are talking about the molestation of children.

Molestation of children by Priests is absolutely not defensible.

One Priest is too many. Yes, indeed, but it a little bit late in the day to expect impeccibility from any group of men< especially when we are talking about hundreds of thousands. As Madison points out, if men were angels we would not need government.

Folling with kids is bad news, but what makes you think that these other professionals don't? I suggest you readthe reports on a few male-practice suits. Maybe priests need professional insurance?

As a practicing Catholic for 64 years with 24 years of Catholic education (eight of which were studying Catholic philosophy and theology), I feel qualified to speak out....Hopefully, someday soon we will look at the pope's pres ent position on condoms as equally absurd and harmful.

Hey Selvaggio. If given the choice between your two-bit opinion and that of the Pope, guess who I'm sticking with? You can just STICK it!

What a low-life cretin this guy is.

This guy obviously hasn't read even the first book of the Bible "Be fruitful, and multiply". I don't recall any disclaimers attached.

'Former' priest alert. Left the priesthood in 1968. What a surprise!
