It doesn't have to be. I think a lot of people tend to overreact for two reasons: 1) the fear of the "unknown," and 2) they take their cue from the media. If this is really smallpox, the media will be all over it and create a mass panic. Don't listen to them.

It is not unknown and is very serious and very scary.

OBTW, the way the threat was received may be telling. If I'm Alex Quaida, I want the people exposed and disseminated into their own spheres of movement BEFORE I give a warning, to maximize impact. So if I called in and claimed its on board, than its probably bogus. But if someone squealed, than that's different.

Good point. I am not 100% up to speed on the measures that the CDC would take. I would think that they would at least wait for soem initial test results to come back first, which if the Antrax cases taught us anything, could take days.

Let's review:

We have a terrorist Muslim sect that's at war with the U.S. A plane going from Taipei to Newark is stopped in Seattle because somebody called JFK airport to report a smallpoz contamination aboard.

Smallpox, itself, had been eradicated from natural sources so any contamination would have to be from terorists. Let's check the flight manifest. Any Arabs on the plane? Shouldn't be too tough to spot. Any whacked-out kids from commiecenter Marin County, CA on board? Not hard to check either.

Since we know the terrorists perfer to victimize American-based airlines, why should we be suspicious of a Taiwanese airline? And why would the anonymous tip come to JFK Customs when the flight wll be arriving in Newark?

Honestly, I smell a prank here. Probably someone who had a bad experience on EVA and wants to pay them back for their inconvenience.

My money'd be on a hoax, but man, it must be miserable aboard that flight. Imagine even thinking that somebody next to you might be infected and not being able to leave and watching them breathe in and out, in and out...ugh!

Yes, it must be very stressful onboard that plane right now - assuming they've been told why they're being held. Which they may not have been. The problem that arises there is when they start getting cell phone calls from loved ones who've heard the plane is being held - that would cause some major stress.
