Comedian Paula Poundstone released from rehab center

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) -- A judge praised comedian Paula Poundstone's recovery progress Wednesday and released her from a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center where she was sentenced after pleading no contest to child endangerment.

"You have remained abstinent and have done all the other tasks I asked you to do," Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Bernard Kamins told Poundstone during a hearing. "Today is really a day for commendation rather than to bite you."

I agree, assuming the implied charges were true. But I found something funny the other day. I was watching a MSNBC 'expose' on the Taliban. They mentioned how the Taliban would send people to re-education camps for crimes they commit. How is the frequent compulsory drug treatment program solution we have in the US any different? It seems to be used as a way to excuse the behavior by blaming it on some lack of piousness. We have allowed hatred of an inanimate object to cloud our desire to punish crimes against people.

it's so hard to reconcile the early stories on her that were saying that the undercover police audio tape showed that she was having some sort of sexual romp with the 13 year old girl with the fact that it's all been swept under the carpet. Somehow I think that being a lesbian helps and being female helps. If a man was a habitual drunk or drug user and had any hint of a sexual relationship with his 13 year old adopted daughter, then you know the system would not be as nice to him as it has been to Paula.

I read all the published accounts about the allegations against her, too. Maybe I missed something. Would one of you "don't trust the government when they make up a story to try and take away home-schooled kids" pseudo-conservatives let the rest of us in on what you know that we don't. Otherwise you have no credibility when we start talking about police confiscations, IRS bullies, ATF thugs or any other government action taken surely to protect the innocent masses from some evil.
