Freeper Suggestions on Where to Retire
Me | 4 Dec 2001 | Me

Posted on 12/04/2001 8:28:05 AM PST by hattend

I am looking for suggestions from FReepers in lower 48 for city/state recommendations on where to retire.

I have pretty much decided on the western US (excluding the Pacific Coast states) and would lean to the southwestern states. I would stay in Alaska but I am tired of the long winter nights.

Would prefer acreage but you can try to convince me to live in town. :-)

If you know of any on-line newspaper links that have the classified, a URL would be appreciated.

Thanks
Don

How's that for a snide comment! I was talking about California Left-wingers, for instance. And I do believe California has water projects. Where would the Eastern seaboard be without the highway system?

There is a different attitude in the West. I like it. Maybe it is the sun. Maybe it is easy access to prunes. I have heard from people who seem to need more of both.

#189: "Yea, I heard he (Dylan) was really, really bad."

It sounded like a couple of cats stuck in a cars fan belt...

How about Florida...specifically Miami-Dade county, where over half of the population doesn't speak english (was that fact ever brought up during the election crap???).

I live in Florida myself.

I see no reason why Miami/Dade would be off limits to those retirees who like big-city advantages and who know some Spanish, do not feel threatened by the prevalence of that language. Much of the crime and disadvantages there are tied to specific areas and neighborhoods easily avoided with a little savvy.

But you will note that I state that the best retirement area generally for anglo-americans is the coast region of just three counties: St Johns, Duval, and Nassau.

Those who are going to live behind total Air Conditioning can pick the gulf coast or central areas, but us old liners hate to turn on the AC, and up here we don't really HAVE to, not usually, er...not too often, anyway?

I was just thinking ahead to my retirement (still a long way away) so I dug up this thread. I'm going to be looking for 20+ acres to put a retirement home on. Lots of room for the dogs to run.

I dont think you can go wrong there. I am suprised that noone has mentioned safety.
We live in troubled times. I would not want to live downwind from any large city or military base near the west coast.

I'll have to research that area. I went to school in Charlottesville VA and like the Blue Ridge mountains. Right now I live 20 miles from DC in Northern VA on a nice private road with a wooded 1 acre lot. I read thru this thread real fast today and I can't recall much said about Montana. Did you consider any place in Montana?

I did kind of consider Montana for a short time. Living in interior Alaska right now and I don't really want to have harsh winters anymore. I know some people in the Helena area and they love it. Plus the land is still relatively cheap (at least that land that hasn't been sealed up by Ted Turner ;-)

If I wanted the long cold winters like I have now, I would consider that area. The mountainous region out in the western portion looks breathtaking in travel magazines I have looked at. However, I prefer the high desert for now (could always change)

I really did want to go to New Mexico at first but it sure seems like they have taken a left turn down there. I could be wrong. The state went for Gore for crying out loud!!!

I realize the liberal socialist cancer is spreading nationwide but Nevada is still mostly conservative AFAIK. I only have 25-35 years left so I'm trying to get as far away from it as possible for as long as possible. LOL!!!

That's my honeymoon destination...that and Oz. What kind of immigration policy they have down there? The gun ban is bad for me.

Montana, Nothern parts of Idaho are places you should consider. I would recommend North Eastern and North Western parts of California, but the Liberals in LA and SF set the agenda, as other posters have mentioned above.

If you need to get the most out of your money, go to Rapid City, SD. Winters are relatively mild due to the chinook effect (I have friends that golf there in February most years), and the cost of living is low. Taxes are the lowest in the country. You're just 10 minutes from the mountains. Crime is very low. Just a suggestion.

And you get represented by Little Tommy Daschle for free.

RETIREMENT
20% of Tauranga's residents are over 65 years old, compared with 12% for the rest of New Zealand. The town actively markets itself to the retirement market. New Zealand currently has no immigration scheme that allows self-supporting people to gain permanent residence for retirement purposes. The government has no plans to introduce such a scheme.
