Surgeon General: CDC Labs a 'National Disgrace' SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Health) - US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said that the United States should be ``ashamed of the condition of the laboratories at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.'' The labs are out-of-date and poorly equipped, he said, ``and these are laboratories that are relied upon around the world.''

Satcher, who held an impromptu press briefing at the American Medical Association House of Delegates meeting here, said ``the laboratories had no power for 15 hours during the early days'' of the anthrax bioterrrorism attacks.

Satcher, who previously served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the whole US public health system needs an infusion of cash. ``I support the proposal by Senators Frist and Kennedy to boost the public budget by $3.2 billion.'' The Bush administration is asking for an increase of $1.5 billion.

Beyond problems at CDC headquarters, Satcher said that all public health labs--state and local--need to be re-tooled and updated. ``There are local public health labs that don't have fax machines, that have no computers so they cannot receive e-mail updates,'' he said.

Moreover, Satcher said, ``We need to train more epidemiologists. It's my understanding that there are 10 states that have no trained epidemiologists in their health departments.''

Satcher, who is a member of the AMA House of Delegates, was a featured speaker during a session on bioterrorism.

Good grief! Will I ever live this down???

All I can say is, case in point. If that doesn't buttress my comments I don't know what would.

Sheesh, who can remember everything that was wacky with clintoon and his goons?! There were so many. I'm still wondering how this country survived eight years of that scum. Despite forgetting you still got it right!

Well, once again we are left with but one question of a Clinton administration appointee: WHY DIDN'T YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT WHEN *YOU* WERE IN CHARGE??????

I live near the CDC. It's located about 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta near the Emory University campus. It's also located one block from the Emory University Hospital and from one of the largest children's hospital in the SE. There is no way the CDC can be properly secured in its present location.

It's one of only two location in the world storing smallpox samples (the other being Russia). It's also storing Ebola samples and who know what else.

The building is located right next to the street with no fence around it.

I drove by a week after 9/11 and saw only one police car in front of the CDC. I went by a few weeks later and three police cars were in front of it. Now cement barriers have been added.

The CDC needs to move out of Atlanta, somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

There shouldn't even be a surgeon general. It is a complete waste of money.

Surgeon General: CDC Labs a 'National Disgrace'

In that case, they should be named the William Jefferson Clinton Labs.

Hello...the Clinton people never go away, do they?

By the way, regarding Dr. Elders, she was from Arkansas and had worked with Virginia Kelly, Clinton's mother, when Kelly had a patiient die due to her neglect. Somehow, after that, she kept getting these amazing political appointments in Arkansas state government, and then of course she was the FIRST one Clinton thought of when he needed a Surgeon General.

I am just full of this information. Glad I could find a place to use it.

"Alex, I'll take Clinton scandals for $500!"

First Satcher lied about performing abortions, then he lied about the numbers. Then, as I recall, it turned out he had some really crazy connection with the Tuskeegee experiments. Then clinton gave him an interim appointment, which should have expired.

What is this third-rate political hack doing in such an important post, when public health should be prepared to deal with serious threats. A fat lot of good this condom-pusher would do if smallpox got loose in one of our cities.

Yes, it is a plea for more money and I want to know what happened to the money we already spent before giving more. The CDC has been screwing around for years, doing junk "research" on gun violence, for example. Typical bureaucratic profiteering from 9/11. Just say no.

Remember Coop's uniform? With a little color it could have been worn in Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Un, excuse me, but the text failed to mention the fact that CDC is ALREADY undergoing major renovation and new construction. Suck wind, Satcher.

Sure do. In fact I liked the guy up until the Aides fiasco. All the emphasis was placed squarely on heterosexuals and what they needed to do to stop the disease. But certain bath houses were off limits. Nope, couldn't touch those.

Quoting from Where Is The CDC Now That We Really Need It:
The new head of the CDC was Dr. David Satcher. Quoting from The Atlanta Constitution of August 21, 1993:

"Dr. Satcher has been a force in medical issues affecting minorities. Since he joined Meharry, the school has won national recognition for its Institute on Health Care for the Poor and Undeserved, as well as outreach programs to prevent teenage pregnancies, improve drug abuse treatment, and keep children in school."

Keeping children in school is not a qualification for a Director of an agency whose purpose should have been controlling communicable diseases. These issues, however, were perfectly in step with the government's shift from the attack on communicable disease to attacks on selected lifestyles and behavior.

Clinton put him in to go after our guns and other civil liberties under the guise of "prevention," as well as to further redirect the agency's mission away from communicable disease to social welfare programs to buy votes. As a result, we got blindisded by germ warfare. Chalk up another for the Clinton Legacy.
