Surgeon General: CDC Labs a 'National Disgrace' SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters Health) - US Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher said that the United States should be ``ashamed of the condition of the laboratories at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.'' The labs are out-of-date and poorly equipped, he said, ``and these are laboratories that are relied upon around the world.''
Satcher, who held an impromptu press briefing at the American Medical Association House of Delegates meeting here, said ``the laboratories had no power for 15 hours during the early days'' of the anthrax bioterrrorism attacks.
Satcher, who previously served as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the whole US public health system needs an infusion of cash. ``I support the proposal by Senators Frist and Kennedy to boost the public budget by $3.2 billion.'' The Bush administration is asking for an increase of $1.5 billion.
Beyond problems at CDC headquarters, Satcher said that all public health labs--state and local--need to be re-tooled and updated. ``There are local public health labs that don't have fax machines, that have no computers so they cannot receive e-mail updates,'' he said.
Moreover, Satcher said, ``We need to train more epidemiologists. It's my understanding that there are 10 states that have no trained epidemiologists in their health departments.''
Satcher, who is a member of the AMA House of Delegates, was a featured speaker during a session on bioterrorism.

I really am getting sick and damned tired of these lousy, stinking bureaucrats continually begging for money. If they can't do the job, get the hell out. BUMP
To: Gritty
Cash certainly would help but so would competent management which the CDC hasn't had in 15 years. The whole place with few exceptions is just a wasteland for bureaucratic finger pointing. They love their statisticians and record keeping but have lost any ability to provide competent analysis.
They got into a pout in the early 80's when all of the headlines went to NIH and Dr. Faucci and they've never been forced to wipe the egg off their face. They should bring in one of the military chiefs and let him kick ass for a couple of years...his brief would be to obtain 1 billion in funding for every 100 'section chiefs' he fires and 5 billion for infecting them all with whatever germ they can't fathom.

Thank you Mr. Satcher. YOUR TIME IS UP! I have now appointed (FILL IN THE BLANK WITH A COMPETENT SURGEON GENERAL) to take over. Nice knowin' ya.I hereby nominate Dr. Dean Edell for Surgeon General.
He couldn't be any worse.

That outfit is infested with liberal ideologues, and I can't personally believe a thing they say. It's a 'National Disgrace'alright.

Now they teach them fisting.
How the times have changed.

We have a problem so we have to throw more money after it to solve the problem. Nuts!! Anybody ever make mention of the fact that the military is the only agency in the Federal Government doing an excellent job in this War On Terror and many of them have to live on Food Stamps and live in substandard housing? Why do we have to Federalize airport security people so they can get better pay and therefore do a better job? The checkers working on 9/11 did everything they were supposed to do and what Federal rules required of them. Why are we federalizing them?

No matter how much you feed the octopus, it always "needs" more. Quiet! If they hear you, we'll be forced to make our bricks without straw!

Bug Bump "Betty". Elders would be funny if she wasn't so tragic. Remember her Eric Claptrap remark?
I'm surprised the woman could dress herself.

Isn't this the same crowd that Klintoon had researching gun control for the past 8 years instead of looking for cures to aids, e-bola or space herpes??? Don't forget, the CDC proposed that higher taxes on beer prevents Aids in teenagers. I can't quite remember if that was before or after Surgeon General Elders son was busted for cocaine.

Dr. David Satcher is the 16th Surgeon General of the United States. He was sworn in on February 13, 1998. Dr. Satcher served simultaneously in the positions of Surgeon General and Assistant Secretary for Health from February 1998 through January 2001. He also held the posts of Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry from 1993 to 1998. Before joining the Administration, he was President of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1982 to 1993.
He was appointed by the Rapist twice, in 1993 and in 1998.

The clueless Satcher who was the
previous director while at the CDC, then replaced the human cartoon-character,
Jocelyn Elders as Surgeon General. Just what have these two morons accomplished for all their pomp and circumstance besides an occasional update on AIDS, condom use, or in Satcher's case, calling for an "infusion of cash" to make things better?
Seriously folks -- we NEED a 'Surgeon General' like we need 'Hate Laws.'
To: BigWaveBetty
I'm laughing rather sheepishly at that oversight. Good grief! Will I ever live this down???
All I can say is, case in point. If that doesn't buttress my comments I don't know what would.

We must pay close attetion to what happens at school. Here's a little tip I learned the hard way.
My daughter brought home a permission slip to go to a career fair at the school. Yeah, that's what I thought, strange. But I signed it without much more thought. WRONG!!!! There was a local group at this "career fair" that worked with AIDS patients. They handed out literature that told the kids (middle school) DO wear a condom when having anal sex. DON'T share sex toys. I am not kidding and I tell this to everyone on this thread so that when something seemingly innocent comes home and you have the slightest question about it go to the school and find out what is going on!
Needless to say the principle got an earful from many angry parents and that group is no longer welcome in our schools. I don't believe the principle actually knew what they were up to, but I'll dare to say he's much more careful about the organizations he allows to participate in school.

Remember her Eric Claptrap remark? No no! It was Eric Clapner!! LOL I'll never forget it because Rush played it over and over... and I always wondered myself how does she dress herself, find her way to her office, obtain food?! Lucky for her she had a uniform to put on each day. It probably came with instructions!
One thing I don't remember is wasn't she in the military or something? Anyone?
Bug, Big, I appreciate any at all! Thank you so kindly. :-)

Years ago I read that the CDC spent most of its entire budget to simply pay the utility bills to keep all the different substances at their proper climate controlled conditions. The CDC then was egregiously underfunded; however, I do not have any idea when the underfunding actually started.
