Our racks were stacked four high. You had to get the guy in the rack above you to get out before you could turn over. And they didn't call them "fart sacks" for nothing. 'Course, steaming the Seven Seas in a multi-million dollar home with semi-clean rack and three hots a day sure beat the hell out of what the Marines and Army troops ashore had to suffer through. Salute!

Too bad if you got teamed up with a sweaty A-ganger (MM).
I slammed thru my Sonar Qual's in a year & half just to get my own pit (and a cool clean sheet).

One of first thoughts that went through my mind the morning of 9/11 was, "I wish I was still in the Navy."

I got out an HT2 in 94, now I'm back in the reserves as a SeaBee SW3 :)

What I don't miss, though, is sleeping in a berthing quarters with 100 other guys. Ack, now that brings a shudder to the spine....

Ohh, that smell of 65 guys living in the square footage of a 2 bedroom apt is not a good memory.

I loved the NAVY.I served in the Navy on the USS Kula Gulf. 1952 to 1960.

JimRob,your right I remember it well.

When I first got the on the ship I had to be on the bottom bunk, where my butt touched the deck and I had to TAP the guy above me so I could turn over.

But lo and behold, the top bunk was vacated, he left for another ship and I got to claim the top bunk.

I had two feet space above me and I WAS KING OF THE WORLD.

Man, you got that right! Ever been to the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor? Those poor "squids" had to be small and non-claustrophobic! I couldn't do it...
