[history]
December 1, 2001 -- ABOARD THE USS BULKELEY - "Take a good hard look - freedom doesn't come cheap. This is where thousands of innocent people died. Remember this place - ingrain it in your heart and soul because it is you who will make a difference for those who died." Those were the words of Cmdr. Carlos Del Toro as the USS Bulkeley, the Navy's newest guided-missile destroyer, sailed past what was once the World Trade Center and is now ground zero.

Our racks were stacked four high. You had to get the guy in the rack above you to get out before you could turn over. And they didn't call them "fart sacks" for nothing. 'Course, steaming the Seven Seas in a multi-million dollar home with semi-clean rack and three hots a day sure beat the hell out of what the Marines and Army troops ashore had to suffer through. Salute!

Tried to reply to your of-line msg...no joy! (Hey my job in the the Navy was to write thought provoking, well documented messages that displayed insight and not a least bit of panache!...Not to get them delivered.)
Forgot to add: "This ain't no sh..!"

3-up. You could turnover, barely. Hot-racking; 3 guys assigned to 2 berths and sometimes 2:1.
Too bad if you got teamed up with a sweaty A-ganger (MM).
I slammed thru my Sonar Qual's in a year & half just to get my own pit (and a cool clean sheet).

One of first thoughts that went through my mind the morning of 9/11 was, "I wish I was still in the Navy."
I got out an HT2 in 94, now I'm back in the reserves as a SeaBee SW3 :)
Bump from the USS Proteus (AS-19) and USS Cape Cod (AD-43), may they rest in pieces.

Great Post
Thank you!
God Bless

What I don't miss, though, is sleeping in a berthing quarters with 100 other guys. Ack, now that brings a shudder to the spine....Ohh, that smell of 65 guys living in the square footage of a 2 bedroom apt is not a good memory.

I loved the NAVY.I served in the Navy on the USS Kula Gulf. 1952 to 1960.
Tonkin thanks for the USS Kula Gulf logo.
JimRob,your right I remember it well.
When I first got the on the ship I had to be on the bottom bunk, where my butt touched the deck and I had to TAP the guy above me so I could turn over.
But lo and behold, the top bunk was vacated, he left for another ship and I got to claim the top bunk.
I had two feet space above me and I WAS KING OF THE WORLD.
LOL

Man, you got that right! Ever been to the USS Bowfin in Pearl Harbor? Those poor "squids" had to be small and non-claustrophobic! I couldn't do it...
Love ya, guys - you've gotten the Marines in and out (well, except for Guadalcanal......) in pretty good order.
