On tonight's Special Report with Brit Hume, (hosted by Jim Angle this evening), at the close of the show when they normally have some funny video clip, they showed President Bush and the First Lady on their way to Marine One to leave for Camp David for the weekend. Jim said "You will see the president notice something unusual on his way to Marine One".
As the video starts, the First Lady is leading the way into the helicopter with the spaniel dog on the leash, and the president is right behind her with the Scotty on the leash.
As the First Lady entered the chopper, the Marine at the gangway saluted and held his salute. The scottie the president was walking decided it wanted to squat right when he got to steps. The president pulled on its' leash, but the stubborn scottie persisted in squatting. The president bent down and scooped up the pooch and entered Marine One. After he entered the Marine cut his salute and returned to the position of attention.
Moments later the president reemerged from the helicopter and out onto the steps. The Marine was standing at attention, head and eyes straight ahead. The president leaned over and tapped him on the left arm. The startled Marine turned his body toward the president and received his returned salute!
I was so impressed by this true act of respect for our military people by our president! He really does get it. Most any other person of his staure would have just continued his journey, disregarding the neglected return salute. Not George W. Bush. He is earning the respect of the military community, not expecting it - as most would.

President Bush saluted BETTER THAN clintbilly EVER did!
Yup - the first picture I ever saw of Bush returning a salute as our new President it was obvious - he knew how to salute. God bless him.

I watched it when it HAPPENED, and marveled!!
It was so typical of him, that kind of respect and treatment of your own ingrained in the man.
Ha - I met him in February of 2000 when he came to my small town campaigning in South Carolina after the New Hampshire defeat.
McCain was supposed to have our Veterans' vote, but we delivered 50% of that to GWB and set his feet on the path to the White House!.
I had made on the computer a lapel sign in color that said "VETERAN for BUSH," and when he stopped to shake my hand, I pointed to it and was going to say I'd made it for him, when he interrupted me and said strongly, "I NOTICED IT EARLIER!"
( I had been about 12 feet from where his podium was in the middle of the circle of the town.)
Without pausing, he whipped up his pen and signed his name on the sign - on my body!
(No - unlike that gal who whipped off her top when Clinton signed her t-shirt, I did NOT do so!)
Note, too, he did not first look around to be sure the cameras were on him like Clinton would have done.

I thought the little sweetie was an 'air transport only' puppy. :^)
The last month or so he's been walking to and from the helicopter, mostly.

Wait just a minute. Wasn't this the guy who deceived Col. Holmes? Wasn't this the guy who wrote that he loathed the military? Wasn't this the guy who led demonstrations in England where the flag was burned? Wasn't this the guy who made officers serve food in the White House to his political party pals? Wasn't this the guy who refused to give armored support to the Rangers in Somalia. Wasn't this the guy who tried to claim he was on active duty and not subject to a lawsuit? No. That's right. It's that other guy --- what's his name again? I can't remember.

I was lucky enough to catch this event live on Fox ... and, boy, did it leave me just swelling with both pride and joy at our President! May God bless and keep him!
And kudos to Brit for showing it at the end of his show ...... so many can't see such happenings live during the day.

This story brought a tear to my eye. After 8 years of photo ops, I am proud of our Commander in Chief!

It is great to see a President who thinks enough about the men and women who serve under to come back out and return honors as a Veteran myself it warms my heart to see that President Bush is a man of substance and cares about honor and respect.
