Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 P.C. Town Bans Santa Claus Is something strange in the water in Montgomery County, Md.? This enclave of leftist thought police is notorious for censoring Indian nicknames of sports teams and trying to criminalize smoking in private homes. Now one of its towns has banned Santa Claus. Kensington Mayor Lynn Raufaste says that a mere two families "felt that they would be uncomfortable" with Santa being part of the annual Christmas tree lighting. So the town council gave St. Nick the heave-ho-ho-ho. These two families, who don't celebrate Christmas, say they feel excluded because - duh - Santa is synonymous with the holiday. In years past, Santa would arrive on a fire truck and light the tree with the mayor. But on Sunday, the mayor will light the tree herself, something she calls "a shame," WJLA-TV reported today. How come kooky, out-of-touch bureaucrats and politicians have no consideration for the majority who are "uncomfortable" with P.C. idiocy? We know there are plenty of good, sensible people in Montgomery County, because some of them have written to us about the Berserkley-like nonsense going on there. It is time for the silent majority to contact their elected officials and roar.
Dear Miss Kitty:
My fellow Freepers are going to show up at your 'holiday tree' lighting dressed as Santa. Hope you spineless weasels have enough spine left to face down the rest of the country. We're coming! You all ought to be taken out to the nearest stable and horse whipped
HO!HO!HO!

What color is the sky on your planet??
Does Montgomery County get an occasional tornado or hurricane???????Probably from the SPIN from the local press maybe??
Would that be true, billhilly??
If "Santa" is banned, I guess all the "Santas" out there should make sure not to do any shopping in local stores. They can spend their dollars in a more Santa-friendly environment.
Ho Ho Ho!
Ordinarily, I might agree with you on the smoking issue.Dittos and you haven't. My Mother passed away this past January from tobacco-related cause - Emphesyma, COPD. I sure can empathize/sympathize with you, friend.
However, my husband has severe emphesyma and to hear you say he(or anyone)
is welcome to quit breathing was beyond kidding. We try to avoid situations that
make smokers uncomfortable, but there are times it is inevitable.
And I hope that in those times people are flexible.I have never run
into anyone who wasn't, yet.I do think the town is out of line as far as cancelling Santa.
I apologize if I have offended anyone.
For years I tried to get her to quit smoking, and gave it up 20 years ago because I decided that my interjections were only causing a situation and not solving anything.
Last fall, when she clearly saw how it had severly deterioriated her quality of life (she DID finally quit a year before), she told me I wish I had quit a long time ago. What could I say? - I know, Mom. . .so do I was all I could say at the time. . .
It's not my fault. I am a victim! My parents lied to me! Generation after generation of lies, all lies. Finally, someone is ballsy enough to stop those lies. I am so relieved!..............NOT!
You need to get a life. Does anyone think God made a mistake when he gave us imagination and laughter? Don't think so.
The mayor was on the radio with Ron Smith (WBAL, Baltimore) today and she said most emphatically that it was not a Christmas tree - it's a Holiday Tree.
She also acknowledged receiving tons of e-mails, fax's and phone calls.
Ron told her that she should expect quite a few Santas to show up at the ceremony. And he recommended that any listeners who had access to a Santa suit should attend.
Have seen it happen.
