My husband wants to network our 2 PCs to share a broadband connection and printing capabilities. He is talking about something called a LinkSys.
I have told him with Christmas coming, etc, he would have to wait until after the New Year. He has been pouting about this for weeks, and I've decided to surprise him with the equipment for Christmas. Here's my problem: I have no idea what I need to buy! I'm sure some of our techie-Freepers out there can help me. I don't know what you might need to know about our existing equipment, so I'll give you everything I know.
2 desktop pc's. Both have USB ports AND NIC. PC#1 is connected to DSL via ethernet modem and has printer, PC#2 is connected via dial-up, no printer. They are in different rooms, 20 feet apart. I think he wants to go wireless.

I know a much easier and fun way to make him a happy man but I'm too well raised to discuss it on a family site. ;-)

Linksys Model # BEFSR41
You can network 4 puters and it has builtin Firewall. Cost about $159.00 at Office Depot?

Yes, he said something about a firewall. What else do I need to buy? Such as cables, etc.

Help me make my husband a happy man! No problem. All you have to do is get him liquored-up, have sex with him, and then make s'mores.

Well I have been doing similar research. What I have come up with for a wireless setup is the following:
1 Part# BEFW11p1 Linksys Wireless Router with Printer support
2 Part# WDT11 Adapters for PC Wireless Net Card
2 Part# WPC11 PC Wireless Cards
All are Linksys part numbers

I usually end up with the winning score in your scenario, if you know what I mean. Not that he minds. After all, a happy wife means a happy LIFE!

Try a combination of posts 7 and 8 for best results.

Thanks! I'm going to search for those components.

Saw one for $79.99 at CompUSA (The 4-port). Got mine for $99.00.

I have told him with Christmas coming, etc, he would have to wait until after the New Year. Huh? Oh, never mind. I won't go there(/humor).

My best advice is to get him a $200 gift certificate to whatever big computer store that he likes to go to. Speaking from personal experience, I bet your husband already has everything planned out to the last detail so it's probably better just to let him pick out what he wants than having to return stuff.

"You can network 4 puters and it has builtin Firewall. Cost about $159.00 at Office Depot?" I bought one of the LinkSys 4 port Cable/DSL routers this week for about $100 at Best Buy. I just set it up on Tuesday and hooked up one PC using Win ME and another using Mandrake 7, and they work perfectly. It's very easy to set up and the instructions that come with it are very staightforward so that a novice can install and use it.
Here is the link for the LinkSys 4 port router -- click here
Again, Best Buy www.bestbuy.com has the best price for this particular item -- about $100. CompUSA has it for about the same price, and I think the Office Depot and Office Max have it for slightly higher.

Aww, you're probably right, but it's not as much fun as watching his face when he opens the stuff.
To: sigSEGV
The price probably came down since Xmas 2000 ?

OOhh. There's something on Tech TV right now about this!
