Are you eccentric?
— ^ | 11/21/01 | Xenalyte

Not long ago, my boss's boss joined a decent-sized crowd of people who deem me eccentric. I'd like to know why other FReepers are considered idiosyncratic (if you don't mind sharing).

Hmmm,my friends would say yes, but I just do big 180's in my life really.Ex:I've seen Randy Travis Live,but I've also seen Pearl Jam in Portugal.I enjoy Bourbon after work while my friends drink wine and beer.I lopped my long hair off after 12 years w/out telling family,friends+Boss and co-workers.I just let them notice whenever I regularly I saw them. Eccentric?Perhaps if I won the lottery I'd be ECCENTRIC but now,I just do my own thing.

Hehe, good answer #112, Bunny.

The definition of an eccentric tends to have the following traits in common:

* Nonconforming
* Creative
* Strongly motivated by curiosity
* Idealistic
* Happily obsessed with one or more hobbyhorses
* Aware from early childhood that he (or she) is different
* Intelligent
* Opinionated and outspoken
* Noncompetitive
* Unusual in eating habits and living arrangements
* Not particularly interested in opinions of others except to convince them of his/hers (correct) point of view
* Mischievous sense of humor
* Usually eldest or only child
* A bad speller (often through choice)

They go on to say that eccentrics are happy, long lived, and a healthy breed.

Too many things to list, but one thing that always makes "the crowd" look at me funny is because I'm a double goofy footer.
I just smile sweetly and tell them it was the ballet training. That explaination does no good as none of them were ever ballerinas.

And I'm so damned eccentric I won't tell you what a double goofy footer is! :-)

very much so! i rarely capitolize my words. (lazy, i guess).
i always have done things differently. could be my zodiac sign (aries).
after buying a new motorcycle engine design, i put odd ball parts of my own design on it. one guy said 'it's like a bull dog pup....so ugly you can't help but love it'! (he bought the bike from me)
i've gotten more eccentric in my musical tastes too as i've gotten older. raised on rock 'n roll, i now listen to all types of music. and to prove it i just checked out these cd's from the library:

rosemary clooney (16 most requested songs)
the best of phoebe snow
keb mo (blues)
ottmar liebert (world/classical)
patty loveless (strong heart) (country)
liz story (piano)
midnight oil (lib/rock)

i still like rock, but i'm not stuck on some classic rock station as there is too much different music out there. i also like classical and 'bolero' is one of my faves, along with 'fanfare for the common man'!
i also listen to chopin and visualize the B-52 bombs falling and exploding on the afghani landscape in a slow motion 'arc light' parade!!!

i've been called 'weird' a time or two, but i just come back with a haughty 'UP YOURS'! (like i said, i rarely capitolize!)

I know what you mean, I still drive a 1987 piece of sh*t Dodge RamCharger with 195,000 miles on it, but then I also ride a 2001 Kawasaki 1500 Vulcan Classic. I enjoy shooting my papered Machine Gun, cutting up wood with Det-cord, I've been known to jump out of perfectly good airplanes(with a parachute). I have enjoyed trying various and sundry things in my 50 years, and I don't consider myself eccentric. Others might, but not me.

Folks around my office think I'm really eccentric too...

I believe that Time does not exist out side of the human brain and to a lesser extent in animals. I believe that this 'Time Ordering Ability' is synonymous with consciousness. I call it my theory of 'Non-time space'. Everything occurs at once and your brain filters out all but what you need to survive. The secret to 'Grace', Nirvana, Dhyana, and Enlightenment is to destroy this 'filtering ability' through ritual and prayer. God is the great creator of all the infinite possibilities that your brain filters through to give you reality. The Lord created your brain to do this and wants you to join him in 'His time'.Christ is our savior and has shown us the path to redemption--he was human and The Lord and lived in this non-time space--read 'The Beatitudes' in the Bible for an idea of this... I believe this strongly and try to explain it to people I know.

In the Active Duty Army I jumped out of airplanes and stuff. I am a competitive powerlifter and compete in strongman contests. I am an electrical engineer that worked my way through college as a bouncer. I carry a gun almost everywhere and ride a motorcycle to work even on the coldest days. I play the bagpipe semi-professionally (I am not yet a 'Grade I' player).I play the bagpipe for the National Guard--my MOS is 'double-bladed woodwind player'. I am an avid Tuvan Throat singer, play the didgeridoo and have Celtic and Scythian tattoos I got in Scotland. I hunt and eat elk. I love elk meat.

Sometimes people are afraid of me.

I know where your coming from! I listen to the buzzing sounds from my toaster every morning. After years of study, I eventually learned its secret language and now it makes all of my important decisions.

I live in Washington DC, I don't own a car or TV, I walk to work, and I worry about whether I should get up and stretch on the plane. Do I qualify?

A lot of people think I'm eccentric. I'm not sure why.

My hobby is playwrighting, and I like the theater. Okay, that's a little unusual, but not way out there.

I'm a Federal government employee. Okay, there are two million of us, so that's not too unusual.

I'm a diehard conservative, but so are millions of others. Hardly qualifies as unusual.

Can anyone see anything that might qualify me as not fitting the norm? Someone said something about "an odd combination" but I'm not sure what they meant.
