Sons of Confederate Veterans fight to get book in library

SUMMERVILLE (AP) (--) The Dorchester County Library Board is on the front lines of a fight to put a book refuting current history written about the Civil War on its shelves.

"The South Was Right!," written by Sons of Confederate Veterans members and brothers James Ronald Kennedy and Walter Donald Kennedy of Louisiana, states the Confederacy had the right to be a free nation and most of what is taught in this country is false and misleading.

A crowd of about 50 people, mostly members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans in St. George and Moncks Corner, pleaded for the board to approve the book Tuesday night.

Library director Mickey Prim is reviewing the book and is expected to make a recommendation to the board in about two or three weeks.

St. George resident Laren Clark said she tried six months ago to donate the book the county library but was told the title was too inflammatory.

"There is no reason for this book to not be in the library," said St. George resident Charles Moorer.

But board chairman Jim Neil asked the group if upon approval, there would be any objection to it being placed at the Summerville branch instead of the main library in St. George because of a space shortage.

Several audience members offered to supply shelves.

A retire teacher I know used to buy alternative texts--with his own money--to put in the library for the students to at least have access to. They would be accepted and about six months later when he checked, he would never find them. They would be quietly withdrawn. But he kept trying.

To your distress Lincoln dealt only in cold, hard reality. And he shoved it right up the Slaveocrats @sses.

It matters not how many lies are spread about his actions, God was on his side.

Actually I have no opposition to including the Slaveocracy apologist's writings in the Library. We have no guarantees that we will not be exposed to falsehoods and pretensions.

Some of the mirror image professionally outraged might steal it though.

God was on his side

So if you're a winner, God is on your side? Rome lasted for over 500 years and God was on their side? The Spanish Inquisitiion was God on their side? Napoleon, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great?

Just because the man lead the winning side, God was on his side? I present noted historical fact(mind you satirically) and documented case history of the SCOTUS of his injustices not only to the Constitution but to the stateS and you come up with God was on his side? That is about the weakest argument I have ever heard in my life

I've noticed that you can't always find these books in local bookstores. B&N is usually ok, but Borders has only 1 or 2 books from a Southern perspective. Hardly balanced.

It's so important to study both sides (ALL sides) of our history. The only reason for censorship is to promote ONE way of thinking. It's not in the best interest of Union sympathizers or Confederate decendants.

I have also noticed some bookstores are becoming as PC as the "public" libraries.

When the nation was in its greatest peril Lincoln did what he had to do to save it. He did just that by determining that there were enemies inside and outside the North who could not be allowed to hide behind the Constitution while working to undermine it.

There are few scenes more hilarious than you dragging up one of the Supreme Court's decisions that you agree with as justification for defending the Slaveocracy. The vast majority with which you disagree are discretely passed over in silence. Such tactful manuevres may delude the unaware but not those who have seen your vacuous and distorted arguments before.

Amongst the giant chains, Books a Million has the most fair & balanced representation of Southern perspective. Barnes & Nobles with the best overall 'history' section ranks 2nd. Most of the others tend to supress the truth in favor of yankee lies unless you show them yankee money & wait for your order to come in.

I suppose that explains why you have so many brainwashed liberal kneejerks bust these threads. They're just repeating what they've been told instead of seeking the truth in great books like the subject of this thread. There's a reason why liberal fascists want to ban certain books but, the truth is still available to those who seek it out. Aw, Shucks!

I have had a copy of the book since 1994. I read it and saw the common sense in it.

You want to get blown you will have to try another poster.

You clearly don't care for the truth or you would have seen through the sophistic and specious lies posted repeatedly ( and repeatedly blown) by the Defenders of Slaveocracy.

The truth is in the book. Read it & get back to us once you've been enlightened.

Defenders of Slaveocracy.

Could you tell me please which nation 'defended the slaveocracy' for the 85 years we were a nation before lincoln started 'saving it' as you say? You used the defense that lincoln won because God gave him the victory and all I pointed out was that great men like Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, etc.. did the same thing

When the nation was in its greatest peril Lincoln did what he had to do to save it. He did just that by determining that there were enemies inside and outside the North who could not be allowed to hide behind the Constitution while working to undermine it.

So by your justification is the ends justifies the means. That makes sense seeing your other posts. And the South was not the one 'undermining' the Constitution. All you can bring up is Texas v. White which is an important case, but no more important than Milligan or Merryman which BOTH found lincoln to be in error

Oh, sure I am sure there is mucho truth in that book. It is on my reading list. But since it deals with a dead and buried issue it isn't very far up on it. But as soon as I read "The Care and Handling of Women" by the Taliban I will get right to it.

The more enlightened members of the nation in the North refused to go along and pretend slavery was o.k. Such men as Benjamin Franklin who, in 1790, presented Congress with a proposal to get rid of it. By 1777 Vermont abolished slavery, 1780 Pennsylvania, 1783 Mass. and New Hampshire, 1784 Rhode Island,1827 New York, 1804 gradual emancipation in New Jersey,1808 Slave trade banned by Congress (over the objections of the tools of the Slaveocracy), 1820 Missouri Compromise banned slavery north of Missouri's southern boundry. As early as 1785 Alexander Hamilton and others had founded manumission societies.

All this activity was carried out in the face of terrorist activity against abolitionists by the thugs and criminals of the Slaveocracy which, through murder, arson, beatings, mail robbery, had prevented their message from being heard in the Slaveocracy.

So spare us the lame lies that the "nation" supported the Slaveocracy when you know very well that action on a broader scale was prevented by the Slaveocrat agents within the Congress and the Virginia Junto's takeover of the White House.

The more enlightened members of the nation in the North

Would that be the same enlightened members that went on to prosecute those that would teach blacks to read and write such as Connecticut in 1836? Or force them to pay a fee to live in their state such as lincoln's home state in 1853? Or completely forbid them from living in their state such as Oregon's constitution in 1859? Ohio? Vermont? New Hampshire? All of these had 'black laws' in one form or another years before lincoln went forth to 'save the nation' as you say. And that would be the same lincoln that recommended shipping all the 'slaves and as many free blacks as can be convinced to go' straight to Liberia.

Oh, yes, lincoln was a just right paragon of virtue. More like a deluded idiot that could be kept quiet as the northern manufacturers waged war on the South
