Classic/Old Style, Redirection, Locking.
Posted on 11/20/2001 6:41:53 AM PST by John Robinson
To facilitate transition to a 100% database-driven website, articles posted prior to Sept 5th, 2001 will be locked and will not be able to receive further commentary. This will be effective sometime next week, I will attempt to give 7 days of notice (via the posting program) prior to locking them completely. This will allow active discussions on these older threads to be continued to new threads.
As a consequence, I have removed the "Old Style" link from articles posted since Sept 5th, 2001. "Old Style" (/forum/) URLs for such articles will now redirect to the new /focus/ URL.
After the locking, the old /forum/ articles will exist in a read-only state. I will attempt to automatically redirect replies to these old articles to a new thread, allowing discussion of old articles to continue.

    Bump back to the top.......
Question: Is there a location where you can get the # of views to a post/thread? I had one but it doesn't work now..... http://www.freerepublic.com/perl/top?p=2001-10-26http://link/url/here

Don't mean to sound like a "stick-in-the-mud," but why are you doing this change?

    Right back at ya!

August 2000:
The Heileman brewery has been closed . Heileman's was purchased in 1996 by Stroh's, who consolidated operations and sold the rest to Miller and Pabst. The Heileman's brands (including Old Style) are now owned by Miller brewing and will be produced in their Milwaukee locations. The tours stopped in May and the brewery closed down in July 1999. The World's Largest Six-Pack has been painted white; hopes remain high that a new label will be applied to the tanks.

If I understand you correctly, it will no longer be possible to 'bring back' old, interesting threads by bumping them, or to add new info to an old discussion.
This represents a fairly major loss of functionality for the forum. Is there any way it might be avoided?

    Old Style...some nasty stuff...
I remember that from my youth. "Fully Krausened." We used to say "Fully Poisoned."

You can always "repost" an old thread, linking to it in the new thread, thus easily continuing the discussion.

That must be why they're now out of business!
To: John Robinson
Is there any chance of re-activating the old threads (from 2000 and earlier) which seem to have disappeared?
To: John Robinson
Is there any way to make an exception for those threads that still have a lot of activity? Such as the "Christian Chronicles" or "Am I logged on?"?
To: John Robinson
Speaking of "Old Style", anyone have any Style Sheets they want to share?
To: Interesting Times
You will be able to link to the old article, and replies to old articles will be redirected to a new thread with a link to the old article. The loss of functionality and inconvenience is unfortunate, however necessary to advance the forum software.
These old articles are stored only in HTML files, which are terribly difficult to synchronize among many servers. I'd like to move to a 100% database solution.

I like "the old" in fact I'm living in the past more and more it seems like.

You can always "repost" an old thread, linking to it in the new thread, thus easily continuing the discussion. I was thinking more along the lines of a conversion facility that recognizes when an old thread is bumped, converts it to the new format and adds it to the database...
