I don't know about the rest of you, but I am
eagerly awaiting the opening of the first installment of
The Lord of the Rings movie,
The Fellowship of the Ring, which will open in US theaters Wednesday December 19th. It has been 4 years in the making and will be awesome (and I don't use that word lightly).
If you haven't checked out www.lordoftherings.net, you should!
I'm reading thru LOTR for my ~14th time in anticipation!!

I have just finished reading these books, and really want to reread them. They are a wonderful read and I highly recommend them.
I can't wait for the movie either. It can't come fast enough to suit me.

Likewise! I saw the trailer this weekend at the Harry Potter film, and I was absolutely rapt.
I can't wait for this film to come out!

I've read the series several times and am looking forward to the films. I hope they do the books justice.

And anyone who denies that Tolkien was a genius--Glamdring wants to have a word with you, courtesy of Gandalf.

Great post. Bookmarking for latter use!

Simply the finest works of fantasy literature ever written. Can the movies ever live up to the books?

I saw the Ralph Bakshi animated movie several times when it came out in the late 70s and loved it. I hope this new one will be as good. I read the trilogy more times than I can count as a kid.

It was Tolkiens view of myth that that most aided C. S. Lewis in his pilgrimage to accept Christianity. This contribution alone is of infinitely greater value than how well a movie does on its opening weekend.

Thank you for this excellent post.

Thanks; can never get enough articles on Tolkien (aka The Great One). I'll be standing in line as soon as my semester is over - I've been anticipating this movie for ages!

Oh, but the Tolkien books talk about wizards and trolls and evil magic and sorcery. Surely we can't have our children exposed to that. Why the Lord of the Rings is nothing but a manual for satanism and paganism. What's that you say? J.R.R. Tolkien is a Christian? Oh...never mind. That makes it okay. But those Harry Potter books are still evil I tell you. Evil. Unless of course, J.K. Rowling becomes a Christian too, then those books will be okay too.

One Ring to rule them all,
One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all,
And in the darkness bind them.
In the land of Mordor, where the shadows lie.</>

After I read the trilogy, I followed up with The Silmarillium. When I got done, my main impression was that humans sure screwed up the world when they took over from the elves. I never had that reaction to a fantasy (?) book before then, and I never have had since. Tolkein was the master.

Thanks for the bmp. I recently considered reading LOTR for the fourth(!) time - but I realized my dilapidated brain could not muster up the necessary imagination.
I'm really looking forward to the movie, though (is that sad, or what?)

LOL - good point. Was this joint spared the obligatory Potter posts today?
To: Senator Pardek
Nope, they are out there. I'm surprised the world hasn't fallen to Satan yet. After all, the movie theatres continue to crank out newly-minted witches and wizards at the rate of about 40,000 an hour.
