New York Times fooled by WTC urban legend
New York Times ^ | 11/11/01 | me

A friend told me yesterday about reading this story in last week's the New York Times magazine:

As a stylist snipped and fluffed, Jeff Jones, the associate publisher of Gear magazine, spun a story out of ''Sex and the City'': on the morning of Sept. 11, a married man went to his girlfriend's apartment instead of his office at the World Trade Center. When his wife saw the attack on the news, she called his cellphone, expecting the worst, and was surprised to find him so nonchalant. No, it was just another uneventful day at the office, the man told his wife. Jones patted his five-button Dolce & Gabbana suit and chuckled at the predicament. Man, was that guy busted. ''The way I heard it,'' he said, ''it's a true story.''
It's too bad that John Leland, the author of this article containing this anecdote, didn't bother checking the Urban Legends web site, where this same story was published and debunked on OCTOBER 5!

Sept. 11 this bum, who worked at the World Trade Center, had a breakfast meeting. What he was having, however, wasn't eggs. He was with his mistress. I guess you might call him an early riser. His wife tried to reach him. He finally answered his cell way after 10 in the morning. Panicked, she screamed: "Where are you!" Responding to the angst in her voice he replied testily: "Well, where do you think I am? In the office."

So much for the "newspaper of record"!

Hmmm...I work with someone who claims to know the couple involved and said that the wife has since filed for divorce.

Well I am sure there are several instances of this, but we won't hear many of them. The odds are in favor of this having happened.

Remember when Lazio and Clinton BOTH answered a question about an urban legend during the senatorial debate? They were asked about their policy on charging long distance fees for e-mails, and neither one of them knew it was an urban legend.

I can't remember who asked them the question. A New York Times editor, perhaps?

The story I heard was that he wasn't at the WTC Center, but when his wife called he woke up in a tub of ice with a note saying........" call 911, we have just stolen your kidneys".

And then he saw that the girlfriend had written "Welcome to the world of AIDS" with lipstick on the bathroom mirror.

Well apparently at Media Whores Online the burden of proof is on the defense. Just because Nancy Oden was uncooperative with authorities doesn't mean there isn't some big conspiracy to keep her off of airplanes because she's with the Green party. Excuse me but she is the one making the accusation, she is the one that has to prove it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this story is an urban legend, but most of the scopes.com debunking page is about the nature of stories like this in the aftermath of disasters, not an actual debunking of the specific story. Of course, you can't prove a negative.

It could have happened, but I see no mention of pop rocks and coke, so I doubt it's true.

Was that before or after she gave "birth" to the brine shrimp?

A quick search turns up this story that Nancy Oden LIED in her story...

Yet, just recently, the Guardian reported this as fact. Maybe they should do lunch with the editors of the NY Times and thumb through a book of urban legends for material.

I heard a variation of this story told by fomer Congresswoman Susan Molinari in a speech a few weeks ago. She said the wife in the story is her mother's nurse's cousin and swore it was true. In her version the wife tried all morning to reach the husband and had given him up for dead when he called her at about noon and told her he was at the office. She told him to turn on the TV and then come home and get his bags.

Mother's nurse's cousin? Well, of course it's true, then! :)

Yes, I remember that. But what I did notice in the refutation of the cheating 9/11 hubby is that there is no actual proof that it did not happen. I'd guess that given the number of people who worked there and the high level of infidelity, *somebody* had to have been busted that day.
