Radio Free Europe reports that the London- based Al Zaman reported 11/16, Saddam Hussein held a meeting 11/14 with "his two sons" and top officials "to put into place the mechanism for Saddam's succession, particularly in the case of emergency."
Al Zaman "sources ruled out the possibility" of Hussein stepping down, but they said, "He is concerned about the posssibility he may be targeted in a military operation."
The sources say Hussein "has put in place a contingency plan" splitting Iraq's leadersip "between his two sons" and his deputy.

It seems to me that the finesse move here is to orchastrate a "mis-understanding" between the Hussein boys in such a way that more or less evenly divides the military, and sparks an internal conflict. Meanwhile, back at the ranch...The US can covertly prepare to raid the civil war at an opportune time. Then a large part of the iraqi military may be spent against itself and the US hands are clean. I hope they have the ability to do this.
Besides, it would be really fun to watch. The only problem would be similar to a bowl game between FSU and Nebraska: How do you root for them BOTH getting trounced?

Nice poster: "Thank you to the Party, to our relation Stalin for a lucky and happy childhood." And in Ukrainian no less, a people almost made extinct by the murdering SOB.

Which I'm sure we were just unaware of when we were backing him against Iran. We should note just the kind of leaders our government supports. Distorted history again. We actually supported both Iraq and Iran when they were fighting. As George Shultz said at the time, our policy was to see both lose that war, and they did.
As to how much military help he got from us, where was all that equipment in 1991? All I saw that he had was Russian Tanks, Russian Aircraft and AK 47 for his ground troops. Wher was all the supposed equipment we gave him?

Go to the "Hussein the Conqueror" link (the flags in post #38) and you'll see how obsessed Saddam is with modeling himself after other conquerors and tyrants.
Bumps on that thread appreciated.

Another possibility is that Saddamn has received bad news about his health. His days may be numbered in more ways than one.

Hey, listen, I don't need much convincing. Any guy who would have his own blood milked in order to have the Koran written in it, is one power sick dude.

If you live in Iraq, and you DON'T like him, you wouldn't dare admit that you don't like him. He has ways of making you like him, or else. These ways include cutting the tongues out of mouths that criticize him, or returning the bodies of those who make suggestions he doesn't like to their families cut into tiny pieces, wrapped nicely in a body bag. The devil incarnate, in other words. I've heard that one of his sons is even worse than he is. See if you can catch the A&E biography of Sadam. It was on earlier this week. He seems to enjoy inflicting horror on his country.

Okay...I looked at it. Here's to hoping he goes insane (but never comes out of it) like his hero NEB. I'd like to see him grazing like an animal on all fours. Just before we bomb his sorry behind to Allah.

How do you root for them BOTH getting trounced? I just have to imagine that I'm watching a Utah Jazz vs. LA Lakers game. I hate them both. I love to watch them argue. I love to see Shaq get beat by Malone. (speaking of which, I liked watching Barkley beat the crap out of Shaq) I love to see Malone get beat by Kobe. I love to see the Jazz get beat. I love to see the Lakers get beat. I think it all depends on perspective. It's almost like a win-win situation for me.
