THE LEFT COAST REPORT
People have been talking about ways in which we might address terrorism.
Sylvester Stallone thinks he may have the answer: Bring back Rambo for a fourth time.
According to the London Sunday Times, the plot of the proposed movie involves a Green Beret force of one who parachutes into Afghanistan, conquers the Taliban and maybe even captures Osama bin Laden.
The Left Coast Report does see a slight problem with the timing of the movie. The Taliban and bin Laden are likely to be history long before the films projected release date of next summer.
How about bringing back Rocky instead?
Old Folkies at Home
Move over, Richard Gere. A member of the old guard wants a piece of the "love spotlight.
Peter Yarrow of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary is concerned about the patriotism thats sweeping across America.
Yarrow told the Associated Press that a mood of strong patriotism is bad when it fuels the desire for retribution.
Yarrow had some additional advice for the U.S. government. He said it was a mistake for the United States to go after the entire Taliban in Afghanistan; rather, we should find out who is actually responsible for the terrorism.
"We're not going to stop terrorism at the point of a gun. The roots of terrorism are not stoppable that way. The root of terrorism is evil," Yarrow said.
The Left Coast Report wants to offer readers this friendly reminder: This is the same Peter Yarrow who wrote "Puff the Magic Dragon."
Losing My Religion Made Me Naughty
On Monday in London, the "air rage" trial of Peter Buck, guitarist for the American rock group R.E.M., began with some choice words from the prosecution.
The prosecutor described the guitarist as having acted like a naughty child during an eight and a half-hour Seattle-to-London flight. After allegedly downing 15 glasses of red wine, Buck "became the transmogrification of Dr. Jekyll into Mr. Hyde."
The musician pleaded not guilty to charges of being drunk on an aircraft, assaulting two crew members, interfering with the performance of crew members' duties, and destruction of property.
The judge mysteriously dismissed the jury Tuesday and hasn't set a date for a retrial.
Blaming Private Ryan
The Los Angeles Times reported that on Sunday nearly 18 million viewers tuned in to see the movie "Saving Private Ryan."
But ABC aired the uncut version of the Steven Spielberg film, ignoring the fact that it fell within the traditional family time slot.
A spokesman from the American Family Association expressed the sentiment of plenty of disgruntled parents by saying that "network television is simply the wrong forum in which to show it unedited."
It appears that Private Ryan isnt the only thing in need of saving.
Big Beautiful Boycott
As previously reported (Nov. 6), the Gwyneth Paltrow-Jack Black comedy "Shallow Hal" is involved in a weighty controversy. The editor of Big Beautiful Women (BBW), a magazine that caters to the more ample female, voiced objections to the movie for its use of "stereotypes" of obese people.
Now a national activist organization for those who live large is calling for a boycott of the film. The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance states that films such as "Shallow Hal "not only reinforce stereotypes and myths about fat people, but underscore the prejudice against fat people in this country.
The Left Coast Report is thinking of starting an organization of its own: The National Association to Get People to Lighten Up.
Even as we speak...
Rambo Rivera is preparing to "invade".
As previously reported (Nov. 6), the Gwyneth Paltrow-Jack Black comedy "Shallow Hal" is involved in a weighty controversy.
Do you mean this kind of "weighty" controversy.
Gwyneth with a "few" extra pounds.
