Microsoft Confirms XP Data Loss
ShackNews ^ | Nov 11, 2001

According to The Inquirer, Microsoft has admitted that under certain circumstances, the repairing, reinstalling or upgrading of Windows XP may lead to data loss on your hard drive. Though some of this data might be on a backup that XP makes, there could still be data lost that can't be retreived. There's no word on an upcoming fix.

This weekend I was building a computer for my parents and put XP Pro on it. Seemed to go ok....Then I installed Office XP on it. ...or rather tried to. It started and I left and came back to a "blue screen of death". I could no longer get the system to boot. Safe mode or anything else failed...

At this point I reinstall the OS, and put Office 2000 on it. That went better. Then I tried to get the CD burner working with EZ CD Creator 5 and I was back in the MS ditch again. I found patches that were needed for that software to work with XP. I downloaded them and tried to install them. No go. They said EZ CD was not installed. But, it was. Hummm.....reformat the hard disk and go with Windows ME.

Much smoother install and everything's working just fine. Screw XP.

Oh, and getting XP off the disk was a chore too. I had to research how to get it off. I couldn't just boot on a Start Disk and fdisk to remove the NTFS partition and create a DOS partition and format. ....Nooooooo, had to boot back up on the XP CD and remove the XP NTFS partition and then I could boot on floppy and get the DOS partition and format the disk. What a nightmare....

I'm *not* shilling for Fred Langa, buuuuttt...you sound like the kind of person who'd enjoy this man's writing as he's a hands-on person much like yourself.
Fred Langa's an expert on uSoft, Windows, (or anything uSoft) & then some.

Why don't you try, www.langalist.com & see if you find him & his info useful?

I now *subscribe* to Fred's "pay" newsletter titled, "LangaListPlus."
Let me tell you, Fred charges a *whopping* $10 p/year (w/ NO SPAM!!) for not only the best expertise in the business when it comes to Windows et al (IMO); BUT, also an assortment of unbelievable links to 100s of computer hardware & software sites.
Each site's first checked-out & approved for safety, content, & credibility first, by FredL himself.

There's a poster here by the name of, "Kermit" (whose also been known to go by the name, "JabbaTheTuft") who referred me to FLanga a couple years ago.
I'm so thankful to this Kermit guy for turning me onto FredL, I'd by him a case of Heineken if I knew how to find him.

Try it.

I'm another one in that camp. We're running W98SE at home and it will be our last OS from Microsoft. When it's time to upgrade, Linux will get the job. I'm hearing too much that I don't like about XP. And between WINE and products like Win4Lin, we'll be able to continue using other Windows software.

When ME becomes obsolete, I'll upgrade to Linux -- probably either the Red Hat or Mandrake distributions.

Consider SUSE also. Too bad about Microsoft. I think Bill is a bit over the edge with some of his recent initiatives. To wit: Product Activation and .Net.

Just bought an AMD 1.4 with XP loaded. Fdisk, format, and running 2000

Sounds good, but aren't you bothered about having to buy something you can't use? (Try buying a computer with no operating system these days).

I see Bush2000 is avoiding this thread. He was so triumphant when an upgrade to version 2.0 of Apple's iTunes erased data on machines with their hard-drives partitioned and certain file names.

Why no comment when your darling company's OS upgrade erases files?

XP - no way. I will switch to Linux when W2K becomes obsolete

Why wait? Set up one of those machines with SuSE 7.3 and start learning Linux today. You'll get the refreshing feeling that can only come from using what is obviously a superior operating system (albeit one that takes more effort to learn). Just think, you'll never have to input an installation code again. And you'll never be forced to register, or have hundreds of megabytes of idiotic "trial offers" from service providers spewed all over your hard drive.

Then, after you've come to the inevitable conclusion that it really is better, you can load it on the rest of your machines without having to feel like an "evil pirate". Heck, you can even start burning copies and handing them out to your friends, family, and business associates. All with the comforting thought that no one is ever going to accuse you of a crime. Get started today and you'll have plenty of time to get the feel of those thousands of free programs that come with it!

Another AIX man. Good. I had a near-death experience recently on mine - going to service release 8 from 7. Thank God for mksysb, eh? Another fun one was when the ownership of my db chunks changed during a different upgrade. I couldn't get my informix running to save my life. Once I saw what had happened, it was an easy fix, but to this day I don't see what changed that particular part of the system.

Because I happen to agree with you on this point: Data loss bugs suck! Regardless of whether they belong to Apple or Microsoft. I'm not happy with this one. But let's cut through the chicanery: All software OS's contain bugs. And it is inherently obvious that OS's with greater numbers of users will exercise a greater number of lines of code; thus, revealing a wider variety of bugs. If you either don't know or deny this simple fact, I would advise you to read Watts Humphrey's "A Discipline for Software Engineering" (Addison-Wesley), for starters. My complaint is that few Mac and Linux users seem to be aware of simple engineering dynamics.

Just installed Mandrake and I'm literally overwhelmed by the choices I now have with respect to both front-ends and software applications in general. Very cool.

To me this kind of personal control is worth paying for. I know I could've gotten the distribution for free somewhere, but for some reason I felt good paying for it. :)

c,mon b2k. you should have included windows in there, or left out the linux. the world is filled with clueless windows users and programmers.

[seperated out, cause addison wesley rules] read Watts Humphrey's "A Discipline for Software Engineering" (Addison-Wesley)

twelve bucks off for this ($47.50) at bookpool
