This weekend I was building a computer for my parents and put XP Pro on it. Seemed to go ok....Then I installed Office XP on it. ...or rather tried to. It started and I left and came back to a "blue screen of death". I could no longer get the system to boot. Safe mode or anything else failed...

At this point I reinstall the OS, and put Office 2000 on it. That went better. Then I tried to get the CD burner working with EZ CD Creator 5 and I was back in the MS ditch again. I found patches that were needed for that software to work with XP. I downloaded them and tried to install them. No go. They said EZ CD was not installed. But, it was. Hummm.....reformat the hard disk and go with Windows ME.

Much smoother install and everything's working just fine. Screw XP.

Oh, and getting XP off the disk was a chore too. I had to research how to get it off. I couldn't just boot on a Start Disk and fdisk to remove the NTFS partition and create a DOS partition and format. ....Nooooooo, had to boot back up on the XP CD and remove the XP NTFS partition and then I could boot on floppy and get the DOS partition and format the disk. What a nightmare....

I'm *not* shilling for Fred Langa, buuuuttt...you sound like the kind of person who'd enjoy this man's writing as he's a hands-on person much like yourself.
Fred Langa's an expert on uSoft, Windows, (or anything uSoft) & then some.

Why don't you try, www.langalist.com & see if you find him & his info useful?

I now *subscribe* to Fred's "pay" newsletter titled, "LangaListPlus."
Let me tell you, Fred charges a *whopping* $10 p/year (w/ NO SPAM!!) for not only the best expertise in the business when it comes to Windows et al (IMO); BUT, also an assortment of unbelievable links to 100s of computer hardware & software sites.
Each site's first checked-out & approved for safety, content, & credibility first, by FredL himself.

There's a poster here by the name of, "Kermit" (whose also been known to go by the name, "JabbaTheTuft") who referred me to FLanga a couple years ago.
I'm so thankful to this Kermit guy for turning me onto FredL, I'd by him a case of Heineken if I knew how to find him.

Try it.
