"Sounds like mechanical failure to me, and this will be the end of American Airlines. If this is the best their mechanics can do, they deserve to be shut down"Whoa!, that's a leap of faith......We're at war with terrorists that use commercial airlines as weapons and your first guess is mechanical failure????
This occurred in near perfect weather conditions with no mayday call.....Ohhhhh pleasse....

CNN - 246 passengers, 9 crew on board.

Exactly, Also, he had no good stall or AOA indication, with the wing misconfigured, etc.
"Lower the nose and live!"

It was in Chicago, not Detroit. In that case, the maintenance team in Tulsa, OK made errors in replacing the engine onto the wing after working on it. A matter of a few centimeters threw off the entire balance, cracked the bearings, and two flights later, the engine fell off. The plane never got more than 500 feet off the ground and crashed just past the airport (within a few hundred yards). This plane would have rolled and nosedived if the engine came off, and it would have likely happened at the moment of takeoff when the greatest amount of stress is placed on those engines.
And besides, those engines won't fall off now. They were re-designed to avoid catastrophic dismemberment from the wing.
Whatever. Fox said there were no initial mechanical problems reported from the cockpit. Call it "PANIC!!!", but it's also newsworthy.

Why was there no distress signal? Sounds like the explosion was a bomb.

You are correct. I have people living in that area too. Hope everyone you know are safe. Thank you for your post

The chances of it being terrorist driven are *not* slim.
BTW, it's an outgoing flight, fueled for trip to Santo Domingo.

Belle Harbor about 5 miles from Breezy Point. And, taking off from JFK, the plane would have come above her head and to her right as she looks east toward the crash site.

This looks like a SAM. Too many coincedences. "George, let's warm up the ICBMs in the bullpen."

246 passengers on board and 9 crew members. What a horror!

ABC news interviewing eyewitness named Jackie Powers. She said there was an explosion where the wing meets the fuselage, underneath. What does this mean?

How soon after a crash will the FAA tell us about communication from the cockpit prior to crash? Any FAA Freeper experts? Also, if an engine fell off, wouldn't we be told that pretty quickly?

According to http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/ One eye witness says debris was falling from the sky.
That sounds like they may have had an on-board bomb.

More than 30 children in this neighborhood lost a parent on 9/11. My heart just sank right into the pit of my stomach.... as if these poor children haven't had enough...........

There are apparently two crash sites, one where the engine hit, one where the rest of the plane hit.If true, this clearly points towards terrorism.
