Haunting memories / Oliver North

Subject: Haunting memories

At a UNC lecture the other day they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. There was Ollie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said was stunning. He was being drilled by some senator; 'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?'

Oliver replied, 'Yes I did sir.'

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't

this just a little excessive?' 'No sir,' continued Oliver.

'No. And why not?'

'Because the life of my family and I were threatened.'

'Threatened? By who.'

'By a terrorist, sir.'

'Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?'

'His name is Osama bin Laden.' At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued.

'Why are you so afraid of this man?'

'Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.'

'And what do you recommend we do about him?'

'If it were me I would recommend an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.'

The senator disagreed with this approach and that was all they showed of

the clip.

At the time Ollie was testifying on capitol hill Osama was into the nightclub scene in Europe. Norths nemisis was Abu Nidal. I wonder what happened to old Abu. Did he take early retirement, and is he now collecting his social security in Aspen?

I would like to remain civil as well. Ollie North was a self-perceived patriot. I personally believe that he made a contribution that was necessary under extraordinary circumstances although barely within the limits of the law. I can understand your position and would even agree that Ollie stretched facts, the truth, and tortured the law until it screamed. Having said that, I think that Oliver North performed a service that could have only been delivered by Oliver North. The bad guys have no regard, whatsoever, for the law. Ollie was trying to combat the bad guys and adopted their tactics where he could, legally. Marines are not known as great besmirchers of the law but he was willing to tread on thin ice to protect what he thought was right. This is a bravery of a different sort and can be admired by some of us and detested by others. He made our elected representatives, mostly democraps, look foolish and will never be forgiven for that sin. The world is not black and white, it is mostly gray. Ollie knew how to live in the gray area. For that, he will never be forgiven.

I heard on television he's being protected in either Syria or Iraq. Supposedly inactive now. Not that I believe that for a second.

Watched most of the Oliver North hearings and remember the remarks at the hearings about the home security installation ... but I'm vague in my recollection as to any mention of Osama bin Laden.

Ditto. I too remember the controversy about the home security system, but a Bin Laden comment would not have registered on my brain then.

You are entitled to your opinion. I guess we will have to disagree on this one. Hopefully, there will be things that we can agree on in the future.

What I remember about Noth on the witness stand was when Sen. Daniel Inyoue(in your face)tried to compare Ollies's predicament with the defendants at the Nuremberg trials, and North's attorney,Brendan"sharktooth" Sullivan threw an absolute fit on Inyoue. The next morning Inyoue was replaced as Head of the Senate Subcommittee.

Good post. Seems like these people were responsible for the coke epidemic of the 70's/early 80's and became national heroes by hiding it.

Completely groundless! Stick to the facts before you follow a smearer out on a limb.

I would love to stick to the facts but they appear to have been shredded. One thing for sure is the Seals investigation linked to this was horribly botched, two agents even claimed obstruction by the US Attorney in the area. Would you happen to know who the US Attorney in the area was?

appear to have been shredded

So now you replace it with 'fiction'?

There are 'thousands' of shredding machines in the country. What do you think their intended use is?

There are 'thousands' in the military, virtual all would not think of disobeying orders or risk a court martial. For you to attack one of them for a political end is unconscionable.

I'm sure "virtually all" of the Rose Law Firms employees would not risk jail for destruction of evidence either, so I guess there is nothing to look at there. You either have accountability or not, I see you vote for not.

"Virtually all" Hubells have errors in their time sheets. If 'they' are after you, they'll make you an example. In his case they followed the law to the fine print and with the others turned a blind eye. Hubell didn't do anything (timesheets)that the industry doesn't do as a whole. Your friend Hillary's card was worst.

It's one thing to randomly give out speeding tickets, and quite another to pick out the speeders you don't like and give them a ticket!

You either have accountability or not

You also my friend, I'm holding accountable for vicious gossiping and false witnessing.
