Haunting memories / Oliver North

Subject: Haunting memories

At a UNC lecture the other day they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. There was Ollie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said was stunning. He was being drilled by some senator; 'Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?'

Oliver replied, 'Yes I did sir.'

The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, 'Isn't

this just a little excessive?' 'No sir,' continued Oliver.

'No. And why not?'

'Because the life of my family and I were threatened.'

'Threatened? By who.'

'By a terrorist, sir.'

'Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?'

'His name is Osama bin Laden.' At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, which most people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued.

'Why are you so afraid of this man?'

'Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.'

'And what do you recommend we do about him?'

'If it were me I would recommend an assassin team be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth.'

The senator disagreed with this approach and that was all they showed of

the clip.

I received this email this morning. It’s one of those “Too Good To Be True” items that probably is. However, I’m posting it to see if anyone really knows for sure.

99.9% of all chain emails are bogus. I doubt that this one is any different.

The Iran Contra Hearings were in 1987, long before bin Laden started to target the West.

Back then THE big terrorist bogey man was Abu Nidal, whose name was mentioned in the hearings by Oliver North.

Yeah, I think this is a little off; the name of the 'terrorist' was Terry Reed, not Osama bin Laden.

This site claims it's a hoax (interesting site in it's own right): http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/rumors.htm">http://www.snopes2.com/rumors/rumors.htm

My guess is that if it were true it would be on Ollie's site, and it's not.

'His name is Osama bin Laden.'

Watched most of the Oliver North hearings and remember the remarks about the home security installation ... but I'm vague in my recollection as to any mention of Osama bin Laden.

If anyone was in a position to be familiar with OBL back then, it would have Ollie North. This has the ring of truth. I'll be interested to see whether it can be confirmed that he made this statement.

Urban Legend, I'm afraid. But it sure made good copy, as an editor would say.

Isn't North the guy who spent as much time at the shredder as the klintons did? The guy looked and sounded great in his dress uniform but he still destroyed evidence that could have led to massive corruption.

Don't know what you mean by that, but I think he destroyed evidence that, fallen into the hands of the 'Rats in Congress, could have led to the deaths of undercover agents working for us in Central America.

I just spent 25 minutes trying to find the quote cited above. So far I cannot find it but I see that there are numerous references to a half brother of OBL associated with the Iran-Contra affair. This would lead me to believe that Ollie had some acquaintance with the family and may, indeed, have recognized a potential danger. He did buy an expensive alarm system and would not have made that move unless he thought there was a clear and present danger to his family. Ollie does manipulate facts now and again to his own purposes but he is also a Marine whom I tend to trust in general.

Ben Franklin said that well done is better than well said. Col. North did both in a way that strengthened America, rather than hurt. There are no similarities between Oliver North and Slick Willy.

Wow, it's so great a lot of people in our country have praise for a liar and criminal like North.

Welcome to Free Republic Paul Begalla!

Part of the story was that the CIA was running drugs out of SA to pay for arming rebels in Central America. If there's any truth to it we will never know now.
