Tasty Weird Foods
Self | November 6, 2001 | PJ-Comix

Just to take a break from politics for a bit, I was wondering if there are others out there who also have a taste for weird exotic foods. I thought I was one of a kind in this regard until I read a newspaper article that said that there are many folks who have a hankering for exotic foods that others may find yucky.

I've eaten sea urchin eggs directly from sea urchins, cooked ox tails (or "tako" as it is called in the Phillipines), raw quail eggs, all manner of spicy European sausages such as the very garlicky Kabanosi, blood sausages in Argentina, alligator meat, and I don't even have to be drunk to eat the worm in the Mezcal bottle (although I usually am since I have to drink my way to reach it).

So what are your favorite "yucky" foods? I am always on the lookout for new exotic foods so I will be most interested in reading your comments and food suggestions.

You peanut butter lovers out there should check out Trader Joe's.

Yea, but sadly, peanut butter's not good unless it's processed.....

Actually a big, thick, snappy slice of raw onion is hard to beat--especially a Vidalia from Walla Walla.

Huh? Walla Walla sweets are from Walla Walla, Washington; and Vidalia's are from Georgia.

If you can find anything more exotic/yucky than this, I'd like to see it! And, no, I haven't actually tried any of these.

Various Uses of Placenta

Placenta Recipes (Mothering Magazine, September 1983, Vol. 28, pg 76) Each placenta weighs approximately 1/6 of the baby's weight. Cut the meat away from the membranes with a sharp knife. Discard the membranes.

Placenta Cocktail: 1/4 cup raw placenta, 8oz V-8 juice, 2 ice cubes, 1/2 cup carrot. Blend at high speed for 10 seconds

Placenta Lasagne: Use your favorite lasagne recipe and substitute this mixture for one layer of cheese. In 2 tbl. olive oil, quickly saute meat of 3/4 placenta, ground or minced plus 2 sliced cloves of garlic, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/2 diced onion & 2 tbl. tomato paste, or 1 whole tomato.

Placenta Spaghetti: Cut meat of 3/4 placenta into bite size pieces, then brown quickly in 1 tbl. butter plus 1 tbl. oil. Then add 1 large can tomato puree, 2 cans crushed pear tomatoes, 1 onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 1 tbl. molasses, 1 bay leaf, 1 tbl. rosemary, 1 tsp. ea. of salt, honey, oregano, basil, and fennel. Simmer 1 1/2 hours.

Placenta Stew: Meat of 3/4 placenta in bite size chunks, 1 potato (cubed), 1/4 cup fresh parsley, 2 carrots, 3 ribs celery, 1 zucchini, 1 large tomato, 1 small onion. Dredge meat in 1 tbl. flour mixed with 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp. paprika, pinch of cloves, pinch of pepper, 6-8 crushed coriander seeds. Saute meat in 2 tbl. oil, then add vegetables (cut up) and 4-5 cups of water. Bring to full boil, then simmer for 1 hour.

Placenta Pizza: Grind placenta. Saute in 2 tbl. olive oil with 4 garlic cloves, then add 1/4 tsp fennel, 1/4 tsp. pepper, 1/4 tsp paprika, 1/4 tsp. salt, 1/2 tsp. oregano, 1/4 tsp. thyme, and 1/4 cup of wine. Allow to stand for 30 minutes, then use with your favorite home made pizza recipe. It's a fine placenta sausage topping.

I once served a reporter chicken stuffed with pork rinds that I had boiled in water and covered with chili sauce. He turned it down and I didn't think much about it until I read a newspaper article he wrote where he seemed to be making fun of my appetite.

Horse meat anyone?

There was actually a little hamburger joint here in Fresno many years ago called "Judy Judy Judy's"..any old time Fresnans remember this place? Turned out the meat in the burgers were horse meat which was why they only sold for a dime. You could tell it wasn't beef, it was very sweet tasting.

Not bad. I ate some duck feet just the other day. They're good for your joints and bones since that's what you're eating!

Our Vidalias are from the State of Washington. Says so right on the produce sign or sack. We likely wouldn't buy them if they were called Walla Walla Sweets. What's that?

The price of fame for the farmers of Vidalia, Georgia, is that squat, tasty, sweet onions are called "Vidalias" by local grocers in my state even if they are grown in Washington, not Georgia.

Popcorn with real butter and lightly salted in cold milk. We used to make it over the stove in a screen shaker but now I use an air popper.

I do not like popcorn that is popped in oil. Yum. Think I'll make some again soon. Tonight I made bread in my machine. Too many carbos.

I invented a really kewl sandwich once. I even wrote a newspaper article about it and a local sandwich shop served it up based on my recipe. I called it an "Uncle Marty" sandwich in honor of my late Uncle Marty. It was a sandwich consisting of fried eggplant with bacon on top. Melted mozzarella cheese welded the bacon to the eggplant and covering all that was tomato sauce. It was served in an Italian roll. Try it sometime. It's TERRIFIC!!!

Not Weird, but delicious ...Mashed potatoes with turkey gravy and peas mixed together

Finally, someone who understands!!! I love taking Banquet frozen dinners..particularly turkey or meatloaf, and mixing the meat, gravy, potatoes , and veggies all together in a bowl. My specialty is mashed potatoes with corn, cheese, butter, hot dogs or bologna, ketchup, and mayo.
