Dangerous Times in NYC - A Personal Experience
Vanity

Posted on 11/06/2001 10:29:07 AM PST by Fujiwara

So I'm going home last night on the NYC subway (#1 Train Uptown Broadway Local) when a large (280-300 lbs)agitated, African American man boards the train. The man is wearing a Palestianian head-dress (picture Arafat's typical head piece).

He begins loudly talking to himself aboout how he is going "to have to kill some one". Frightened passengers begin to move away - suddenly he launches an unprovoked barrage of punches against a seated passenger.

Several other passengers momentarily subdue the bad guy - train pulls into the station - bad guy attempts to non-chalantly leave the the train and the station.

So I follow him while talking to 911 on my cell phone. Police arrive quickly, bad guy resists, ends up with a face full of pepper spray - but is subdued quickly and efficiently by NY's Finest.

So the police begin to empty this guys pockets on the street. They find: a copy of the Koran, a book called "Wives of the Prophet", prayer beads, etc. Then they check his waistband where they find A LOADED 9 MILLIMETER HANDGUN, with one in the pipe, gun has no safety.

Later I learn the guy has adopted a musilim AKA, was talking repeatedly about going to Afghanistan to kill people, better yet - he is a convicted murderer so he can be taken at his word.

So what's the point? Do I think this guy is a member of al queda ? No, not even they would want an idiot like this. Do I think he went out last night looking to kill someone for no reason other than craziness and religious zealotry? YES, I do - I saw that in his eyes and his behaviour.

Worse still, I think there are many, many more like him. If I had any doubts that the enemy is among us those doubts are now long gone. Yours should be too.

Are you sure you are not partly to blame for his attack? Do you support Israel? How about repressive Arab regimes?

"What model of 9mm doesn't have a safety..."

I believe Kel-tec makes a 9mm double-action that has no safety. I have a Kel-tec .32 auto double action that has no safety. I always have one in the chamber. Double action autos are very safe. It's nice knowing you don't have to fumble around with a safety, just point and shoot.

That's ingenious! Hornet spray is a household staple never out of arm's reach here (wicked wasps always wanting to take up residence).

20' stream of nasty stuff with pinpoint accuracy! I'll have to remember that if ever a bad person is between me and my gun.

Glock safety is a small lever in center of the trigger. Prevents the weapon from firing until the trigger is pulled.

Most important safety on any weapon is between operator's ears.

I watched a demonstration of this "flamethrower" when my friend was working at an outdoor garden center a few years ago. He pointed this thing out the back gate, held the lighter up in front of it, and released the spray. A wicker plant basket hanging thirty feet away burst into flames and disappeared in about three seconds. The stream of flame wasn't more than an inch wide.

I am with you. I would like to see him answer a couple of your questions.

And how did you "later learn he was a convicted murderer"? What did you do followup with the arresting officers?

How did they subdue him? And why did they then let him go?

He said he got off at 50th and they were midtown north cops. One, I would think that the police, since he interacted with them, would file a police report and inform him of their precinct. I don't think they would just say "bye." And I think a cop would have to say something like "I'm Sargent McVey and this is officer Riley and we are with the 95th Precinct." Two, calling 911 and trailing the suspect would mean constant communication with the cops to give them a heads up on his movement and direction, that seems unlikely in this scenario. Three, his painstaking musings on this dude's background smacks of racism. Hey, I could be wrong, but I lived and worked in NY for 15 years. And I just don't see the logistics of the story playing out. Particularly the cops not identifying the precinct they were out of. V's Wife. I could be wrong, and if so will apologize.

RE: " I don't believe this guy"

your cynicism sucks. but here goes...

The police needed witnesses to the attack, I stood by as they arrested him, one car took the bad guy to Midtown North -- another car took me and another witness to the station. Police asked us to wait for ~ 1 hour and then came and took ciontact info, statements etc. -- they had already inspected the weapon, talked to the suspect, etc and they told us what they knew - e.g gun was loaded no saftey , long rap sheet, crazy ramblings etc.

early this morning the arresting officer arrived at my home to serve me a SUBPEONA to appear b4 the Grand Jury so they can lock this guy up. I guess at part of an effort to convince me taht it is really iomportant that I show up - he mentioned that the guy has a previous murder convicting.

Can't believe you'd accuse someone of making something like this up -- for what purpose?

This is the difference between PRE and POST 9/11. My guess is that before, most other strap hangers would NOT have entered the fracas, preferring to 'not get involved'.

A big part of that reason is that pre-9/11, anyone who had tried to subdue him would have been at as much risk of prosecution as the psycho.
