Don't trust the media, at least not CNN. Says who? A new York Times photographer in Pakistan. Catching up with an item caught last week by Jim Romenesko's MediaNews, on a Web page for sports photographers Vincent Laforet advised: "Don't trust anything you see on TV and be wary of some of the things you read." The Times photographer revealed: "We covered a pro-Taliban demonstration last week attended by maybe 5,000 protestors. CNN stated there were 50,000." In a lengthy recounting of his travails about photographing in Pakistan, Laforet wrote:
"Speaking of the media, I have but one thing to tell you. Don't trust anything you see on TV and be weary of some of the things you read. I witnessed how sensationalistic the media can be during the Florida recount. It's even worse here. We covered a pro-Taliban demonstration last week attended by maybe 5,000 protestors. CNN stated there were 50,000. The BBC estimated 40,000. We're continually hearing of "violent clashes with police" when the TV stations report on non-violent demonstrations we covered ourselves."
To read his dispatch in full, illustrated by some of his photos, go to this address and scroll down to the second story: http://www.manginphotography.com/sptshtr36.html Since he offered no date, it's hard to correlate his statement with what CNN actually reported that day.

HEY ... as has been explained at length many times since our latest War on a Noun began, it is in OUR INTEREST to have the government and the media lie to us as they see fit.

The FCC should pull Time Warner's license for this outrage! What license? You don't need a license to run cable channels.

Lying is a criminal offense. It just depends on what you mean by is. Then again, if you can link the lie to sex then it no longer becomes criminal regardless of whether it is or is not.

I scrolled right past and relooked at the image when I read the comment.

I learned this lesson 10 years ago when I was in the middle east shortly before the Somalia debacle. I was at a satellite earth station watching a live feed (raw video, about 15 minutes) being routed from a market square in Somalia to CNN in the US. To make a long story short, I saw that exact same video that night on CNN International, but it was edited down to a 3 second soundbite with the commentator explaining the opposite of what really happened. I have shunned the news media ever since (until I found FR and Fox came around).

Maybe CNN wants to add a couple of hours to the movie "The Sound Of Music".

But what about Bert?

Well, *of course* the government lies, and the media lie. It's just that, in a democracy, they aren't the *same* lies.

Just a comment on Fox News. Here in Singapore, Channel News Asia, our non-cable 24-hour news channel, has been going to Fox News live several hours a day and made it their main source of news from the U.S. I'm delighted and no one is going to take away my joy. Just a few days ago, in fact, I was marveling at the fact that I was riding a bus here in Singapore while watching Bill O'Reilly on the little TVs they have on most buses. Fun!
But having said that, I am not going to trust even Fox to tell me what the truth is. Rupert Murdoch, the owner, is a shrewd business man who saw an opportunity to make a buck in the cable news business. He's got a very capable man in charge in Roger Ailes, but as soon as the winds of popularity show a change, Murdoch will go that way.
It's hard not to be cynical about Fox bringing on Geraldo. Maybe I should give the guy a chance, but hasn't he been on TV long enough for us to make a pretty sound judgment about his journalism? The guy is a liar and a showman and even if he has changed, I don't want a liar and a showman doing his thing, even if it is for Fox.

I'm sure you've already seen this from your cyberalerts, but here's the discussion about it.

Geraldo. ...is a liar and a showman and even if he has changed, I don't want a liar and a showman doing his thing, even if it is for Fox.I'm with you. Let's not forget that this guy loves Bill Clinton so much he wants (wanted?) to have sex with him.

CNN has this nasty little habit of reporting their opinions as news. They really like to take shots at Bush. They are always looking to destroy someone.
