Vote Earley ( and often)

Vote Earley
Bush, Giuliani, and Bishop Loverde pitch in.

By John J. Miller & Ramesh Ponnuru
November 5, 2001 11:00 a.m.

Behind in the polls and badly outspent by his opponent, Virginia's GOP candidate for governor brought America's two most popular politicians and an important religious leader into his campaign over the weekend. Mark Earley's campaign mailed a brochure displaying a big picture of Earley walking half a step behind President Bush on what appears to be a tarmac. Inside, there's a quote from Bush: "I appreciate his strong stance on holding the line on taxes and cutting the car tax in Virginia." Bush recorded a phone message on behalf of Earley and two ticket mates, lieutenant governor candidate Jay Katzen and attorney general candidate Jerry Kilgore: "Mark Earley, Jay Katzen and Jerry Kilgore are the experienced leaders Virginia needs to keep the state moving forward--with a positive agenda for lower taxes, accountable schools, more jobs, and a safe and secure commonwealth." Earley's campaign also aired a new ad featuring New York mayor Rudy Giuliani: "If I were a Virginian, I would vote for Mark Earley." Voters who tuned in to the start of the World Series game last night would have seen it.

In northern Virginia, Earley may benefit as well from a letter by Catholic Bishop Paul Loverde that was either read at Masses or inserted into church bulletins over the weekend. In it, Loverde reminds parishioners of their "moral responsibility to vote" on Tuesday. "Respect for the dignity of the human person must be part of our consciousness as we enter the voting booth," continues the two-page letter. It also reminds voters of "the priority to protect the human life of all persons, pre-born and born."

The letter would have been stronger if Loverde had mentioned specifically that Earley is the pro-life candidate in the race and that his opponent, Democrat Mark Warner, supports abortion rights. In other words, there's more than just a moral responsibility to vote; there's a moral responsibility to vote for Mark Earley. Another possibility would have been to attach a scorecard showing how Earley and Warner (plus other candidates down the ticket) differ on abortion. Earley, for instance, supports legislation to require parental consent before a minor may obtain an abortion, while Warner won't commit past the parental-notification law that Earley helped enact.

As things stand, the bishop's letter leaves voters on their own to figure out the candidates' positions by tomorrow's election day. Perhaps they're sophisticated enough to know where Earley and Warner stand. Then again, perhaps not--and they won't receive much help from Earley's campaign website, which focuses on taxes, education, and safety issues.

But it's a good conclusion to what has been a lackluster campaign. In the end, though, the only thing that may salvage the hopes of those who intend to vote Earley is if they somehow manage to vote often.

Do you know why the voter turnout percentages threads were pulled? What did they say?

They were bogus, newbie (today), disruptor threads.

"Triumph" was claiming an inside Republican consultant source. I've known most of them for 15+ years, so I asked him to Freepmail me a name:

- first he said it was a person who was a chief of staff to a Senate Committee chair - until I reminded him that the RATS control the Senate.
- then he said "oh, I meant 'former'"
- then he said "he worked for Gingrich" - I was not aware of Gingrich being in the Senate

It went downhill from there. He posted his "source" as the State Board of Elections, then he started another thread.

I pushed the abuse button. I doubt if I was alone.

It was an Earley sweep in my Henrico household. I voted at 7:00 this morning; my wife this evening. Both times, only Earley campaign workers at the Brookland polls.

We got to the polls around 6ish....turnout was light, but here's hoping the real activity was throughout the day. Then again, not much going on here in tiny Colonial Beach.I had to face one of those $%^ Warner signs-as big as the side of a house-right in front of the polling area. But Earley's people were there too,so we were glad to see that.Let's keep our fingers crossed!

Finished up early for once - very light turnout - very disappointed - over 3,800 active voters in precinct and only 1759 turned out - all the democratics won - Warner 1,002 to Earley 731. The only poll watchers were democrats and they had volunteers manning all three tables (alphabet split into 3 groups) until a little after 2 p.m. and then they had phone banks call those who had not voted yet. Where were the Republicans? I hope the rest of the state has a better turnout and votes Earley.

A caveat - my precinct usually votes democratic - we generally have more democrats than Republicans registered.

Yes. Jerry Kilgore won big in the Attorney General's race. I was aware of this before the ballots were counted. I still have my throat intact and I'm free to speak freely.

I hope you are happy now, we have a genuine anti-2nd amendmendment socialist for Lt. Gov. thanks to you and the rest of the libertarians. Now, instead of sending busloads of Richmond citizens to million moron marches in DC at taxpayer expense, Komrade Kaine will get VDOT to put up a bunch of cones on I-95 & route all north bound traffic to the march.

Thanks for the bump. I voted (#4 in my little precinct.) I am bummed, but I guess I'll get over it. The same feeling after Clinton's first election (but not nearly as severe now.)
Well, Thanks for the effort.
We done good in the Delegate races!

Good morning. Turnout was about 45% in my precinct I worked here in Springfield. 473 votes out of 1055 registered. Earley won 239 - 232. Unfortunately it's a brand new precinct so I had nothing to judge that against. After dropping off the results, I swung by my voting precinct (redistricted-was previously very even). Earley got killed, much to my surprise. I figured he'd be close in that precinct, though I had no idea how the redistricting would come into play.

We gave it a good run, and once again the Post was shown to be a bunch of idiots. No 10-13 point Warner blowout, not that I ever for one second believed that would occur. You'd think the folks on FR would learn, but...

The WJLA poll proved to be very accurate.
