"If the guarantor of world peace for the last half century cannot succeed in a war of self-defense against Afghanistan(!), then the whole post-World War II structure -- open borders, open trade, open seas, open societies -- will begin to unravel."
For the Christians out there. The Gospel must be preached to all the world before the second coming. Satan is trying to stop us, but it will backfire if we stand up for freedom.
I imagine (to paraphrase George Carlin) that 5 spores of anthrax in a Volkswagon ran into 3 spores of anthrax in a BMW.
Synopsis: The USA must destroy Taliban first, then Radical Islam in order to keep other rat-nations from joining "them" against "us".
WOW!
Justin Raimundo eat your heart out! You jes' spinning you wheels! You're in grade school compared to Ch. Krauthammer.
Everything that can be done through diplomacy has been done, and now the one thing necessary is to fight this war and win it as quickly and impressively as possible. Only after that can we pursue the other important goals that Krauthammer has identified.
We had eight years of an Aministration that dealt only in words and appearances. Now we are at the beginning of an Administration which must deal in actions, not words, with words only being an explanation of that action. Fortunately we have a President who understands the difference between words and action, becuase there is no choice in the matter, as Krauthammer eloquently lays out.
We must crush the Taliban like a bug in a corner. There is no other alternative. Then, we must crush other bugs in other corners, until not just Afghanistan but the entire world is free of the infestation.
There is no substitute for victory in the great conflicts of world history. This is not just a regional conflict. This is, depite its unusual appearance, World War III. And, exactly as President Bush told the Congress and the people, it MUST be won -- not fought to a standstill like Korea, or fought to a loss like Vietnam. It must be won. Measured in American lives, measured in the lives of people around the world, there simply is no other tolerable alternative.
Congressman Billybob
Oh, yeah...Taliban must die.
Krauthammer was tremendous prior to 9/11... Since then his analyses have been magnificient.
Indispensable. Don't miss a word.
"....The liberal internationalists of the Clinton era could not quite match the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact abolishing war forever for sheer cosmic stupidity. But they tried hard. And they came close...."
"....The post-September 11 realignments in the international system have been swift and tectonic. Within days, two Great Powers that had confusedly fumbled their way through the period of unchallenged American hegemony in the 1990s began to move dramatically. A third, while not altering its commitments, mollified its militancy. The movement was all in one direction: toward alignment with the United States. The three powers in question -- India, Russia, and China -- have one thing in common: They all border Islam, and all face their own radical Islamic challenges...."
".....With Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa on the sidelines, the one region still in play -- indeed the prize in the new Great Game -- is the Islamic world. It is obviously divided on the question of jihad against the infidel. Bin Laden still speaks for a minority. The religious parties in Pakistan, for example, in the past decade never got more than 5 percent of the vote combined. But bin Ladenism clearly has support in the Islamic "street." .....
For now, the corrupt ruling Arab elites have largely lined up with the United States, at least on paper. But their holding power against the radical Islamic challenge is not absolute. The war on terrorism, and in particular the Afghan war, will be decisive in determining in whose camp the Islamic world will end up: ours -- that of the United States, the West, Russia, India -- or Osama bin Laden's.....""...The current pro-American coalition will fall apart even more quickly if the Taliban prove a match for the United States. Contrary to the current delusion that the Islamic states will respond to American demonstrations of solicitousness and sensitivity (such as a halt in the fighting during Ramadan), they are waiting to see the success of American power before irrevocably committing themselves. The future of Islamic and Arab allegiance will depend on whether the Taliban are brought to grief...."
"....The first President Bush sought to establish a New World Order. He failed, in part because he allowed himself to lose a war he had just won. The second President Bush never sought a New World Order. It was handed to him on Sept. 11. To maintain it, however, he has a war to win. ...."
Allah wants good muslims to kill "nonbelievers", right. These sick SOBs will try to start a world-wide depression to sap our national strength and claim that economic woes are proof that Allah wants it so. Millions of people will die while modern western civilization defends itself. Thousands of enemy sleeper cells are busy here preparing to keep us fearful, injured, and in economic decline. Vigilantism may take proactive measures rather than sit by only to render aid to our own killed and injured. Some collateral damage is acceptable. This war on our soil will be more Biblical than medieval and war will be fought for generations. Kill or be killed because this fight is to the death. God will know His own.
Specifically:
If the guarantor of world peace for the last half century cannot succeed in a war of self-defense against Afghanistan(!), then the whole post-World War II structure -- open borders, open trade, open seas, open societies -- will begin to unravel.
Where does Krauthammer get the idea that anything but success is possible? Why does he seem to be trembling in fear at several points that we may not succeed or lack the will to succeed? Bush Sr., he says, gave away victory in the Gulf War. What is the implication?
This expressed fear of failure runs today through Democrats, waiting for events to deliver them a political opportunity. Does it also run through Kristol, McCain and the Standard?
THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT, UNDER BUSH, WE WILL SUCCEED.
THE PRESIDENT, AND ALL OF US, DON'T NEED CONFIDENCE-SAPPING LECTURES ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF FAILURE.
