Muslim put on leave as chaplain after speech [praising bin Laden as hero]

State prison officials have put a Muslim chaplain at the Albion Correctional Facility on paid administrative leave after she reportedly told inmates that Osama bin Laden "is a hero to all Muslims."

She also is said to have told a gathering of inmates that the United States was making a scapegoat of bin Laden, and that the Taliban government in Afghanistan is right in not turning him over to the United States.

Corrections authorities say Sister Aminah Akbar of Rochester was locked out of the women's prison Thursday. She was put on leave while prison authorities investigate more than a half-dozen complaints about the speech, made before corrections officers as well as inmates.

"This afternoon, we put on administrative leave Chaplain Aminah Akbar, who is a Muslim chaplain, pending an investigation into her conduct," said James Flateau, spokesman for the state Department of Correctional Services.

Flateau, who said Akbar is paid $29,395 for the part-time job, said he was barred by union contract from discussing the complaints against her.

Joseph Green, a business agent for the union representing corrections officers, said a half-dozen corrections officers had filed written complaints against her. Inmates also reportedly had submitted at least three written complaints.

Green said Akbar spoke to a group of about 120 inmates and a half-dozen corrections officers at the prison Saturday during an event called "American Solidarity Day."

According to notes taken by officers during the talk, Green said, Akbar told the gathering:

"Bin Laden is a warrior for Allah, as all Muslims should be. Bin Laden is a hero to all Muslims. The Taliban are right in not letting the U.S. take bin Laden. The U.S. has no proof that he destroyed the World Trade Center."

Akbar could not be reached to comment at two phone numbers provided by acquaintances in Rochester.

Green, a business agent for the 25,000-member State Corrections Officers and Police Benevolent Association, said Akbar began her address by noting that the name of the meeting had been changed.

"This event has been changed from Black Solidarity Day to American Solidarity Day," she said, according to the account written down by officers. "I am not an American, I just live here. We have been beaten and harassed for over 500 years, and we should not take it anymore."

Green said she also told inmates the American government had lied about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and was now "making a scapegoat out of Osama bin Laden."

"The United States is a giant country," she reportedly said. "Why are they bombing a country the size of a pea?"

"The inmates got restless, as well as the officers, upon hearing this," Green said.

The union representative criticized the prison administration for failing to pass the complaints immediately to department officials in Albany.

Good for the guards who nailed this b*tch.

Even cooler would be if some of 'em are black.

Anyone got anything on that?

Sister Aminah Akbar of Rochester

"I am not an American, I just live here."

I live in Rochester, I am an American, and I think this is one of the most disturbing articles I've read in a long time. If I was one of those guards, I would have let the inmates have their way with this piece of trash.

She's not an American?

This creature is probably a natural born American Citizen, and has probably not been a member of the Nation of Islam all her life. Her remarks are very similar to those made by "malik shabazz" and by Calypso Louie himself. Unfortunately, you can't deport a citizen, and we don't (yet) have effective, constitutional, sedition laws. The 9/11 attack and its aftermath has really brought the rats and roaches out of the woodwork, though. People are really flying their true colours, for good or ill. It's quite instructive.

So who's asking you to stay, you vile demented b**ch? I'll pitch in $100 for a one-way plane ticket to the destination of your choice, as long as it's not in North America.

Good to know Kentucky has more sense. Our prisons here in Utah also have some excellent Christian programs and meetings. Too bad not all prisons are like these.

I just e-mailed that question to Beebe. My point being, the 9/11 outrage has the unintended potential to unite all Americans and break down the divisions that the the race hustlers and poverty pimps rely on for their existence.

Yes, this is where our tax money goes.

And this is an example of the kind of insanity that will go primetime if the Faith Based Initiative ever gets enacted. Our founders understood that freedom of religion meant keeping the government out of it. Putting government in the business of passing on tax dollars to religious organizations is a direct repudiation of this wisdom, no matter how "good" the purpose. It would be much better for religion and for building republican virtue among the citizenry to scale back federal initiatives and let the people give through religious charities of their choice. Only when the people take care of most of their needs themselves can self-government work. Bush and the Republicans are wrong on this and I hope they are rethinking.

Guys. She's pretty obviously a black American "Muslim." Half the time they have as much connection to Islam as Santeria has to Christianity.

How is it possible for a woman to be a "Muslim chaplain"? I don't pretend to know anything about the ecclesiastical order of the Islamic faith, but I would be floored if it were possible that a woman could be a "cleric."

If true, only in America!

More empirical evidence that racial profiling is correct. Keep your records, remember who said or did what and when the time comes for house cleaning no apology has to be made for throwing out the trash.

The irony is that feminists will be the first to join this woman-hating cult.

She's not an American? Deport her immediately to Afghanistan where she can be beaten, forced to live indoors, receive no healthcare, and left to beg for food.

You beat me to it. I agree completely. Oh, she'll be American enough when she turns 65 and starts drawing her Social Security and Medicare benefits. It would be sweet irony if, instead of receiving her first SS check, she instead received a letter stating that, since she is not American, she is not entitled to draw Social Security. Bet she be at her local SS office in 5 minutes.

Ahkbar is merely stating the same thing EVRY OTHER MUSLEM CLERIC of note has stated again and again.

This is why Islam and Muslims should be considered beyond the pale of religious tolerance in this country and deported en mass. They are no better than satanists and devil-worshippers in their effect on our society.
