Ashcroft's Warning: Dirty Bomb

Am I the only one who heard Sean Hannity, at about 5:40PM EST, stop while on the air and say: "So that's what Ashcroft's warning is. It's a dirty bomb."

No, DrCarl, you are not the only one. Sean said that FNC was reporting that the threat was a dirty bomb. The problem is where? When? How?

That's it. At the time indicated above or thereabouts, Nationally boradcast conservative talk show host, Sean Hannnity was talking about the terrorist threat when suddenly he stopped as if he wass talking to soomeone else and said something to the effect of: "So that's it. What Ashcroft knows is that the threat is about a dirty bomb." Then it was not mentioned again.

Does anyone have any idea what a 'dirty bomb' is?

Nuclear waste material wrapped in heavy explosives which, when detonated, will blow the waste material all over the place, killing thousands in a populated area like Manhattan.
It will also render a large piece of ground useless for a long time to come.

"Does anyone have any idea what a 'dirty bomb' is?" A dirty bomb is a conventional bomb that is loaded with radioactive material that will spread throughout a relatively wide area via the explosion.

I heard Carl Cameron on Fox News tell Brit Hume that there is good information from Argentina that nuclear material was smuggled through Bogata, Colombia and then across the Mexican border into the US. He said the most troublesome information has been gathered within the last 48 hours. I expect a 'dirty bomb' incident within the next 72 hours. Where will it be and what will you do? Weather patterns in the US generally move west to east. Get on the west side of any incident asap?

It will also render a large piece of ground useless for a long time to come. Not really all that long. Most likely no longer than a radioactive half-life of a mere 30,000 years.

A "dirty bomb" is made from a combination of conventional explosives and radioactive waste. It's sometimes called a "radiological dispersal" bomb. It does not have the ability to create a chain reaction a' la Hiroshima: Its primarily purpose is to disperse dangerous radioactive waste and thereby kill people by exposing them to toxic levels of radiation. Radioactive waste is pretty readily available since some countries pay the Third World to bury the stuff.

Yikes, sorry I saw this thread. Sometimes I think it is better to be in the dark so to speak. I long for the bomb shelters of the 60's.

I'd expect a dirty bomb in LA or Dallas. Maybe somewhere in AZ. All close to Mexico border. Since I live in Dallas, it makes my knees weak thinking about it.

I am going to opening night of the NBA, Laker game. I will certainly be keeping my eyes out...for middle-easternmen men and hot babes in Jerry Buss' box.
I am hoping this is not the 'dirty nuke' event planned. Back in a few hours!...
To: blam
Well, if it happens in NYC, I would think Southern New England (where I live) would be affected (as well as NYC, of course). But I guess it all depends on the prevailing winds at the time.
Let's hope it's a dirty bomb, and not a dirty nuke. From what I've read here at FR, a dirty nuke does damage in its own right, but ALSO disperses radioactive material. This would seem to be a far more serious weapon than a regular dirty bomb (e.g., one detonated with conventional explosives).
