My husband is in the process this very minute of installing this software. Personally I like to say a couple of versions behind and allow him to find the wonderful features on his own while I train my OS into doing what I want it to do and then use it.

Not to start an OS war, but more than a few of us have refused to continue on the Microsoft perpetual upgrade train. Try installing Linux (any distribution) as a dual-boot system, then work with both for a while and see which you prefer. I think the chances are at least even that you'll like Linux better.

Yeah, XP seems to be nice so far (I installed it Thursday evening on my wife's machine; had to move her away from that blasphemy called Windows Me, what a rotten trick MS played with that one).
I can't really comment about the speed, because just before I installed XP over Me, I upgraded her machine to a half-gig.
So, even though her machine is a 350Mhz K6-II, it's pretty zippy now.
My only complaint is that there are no drivers I can find for the Philips Rhythmic Edge PSC702 soundcard. The "beta" versions won't install, so I guess I'll have to buy her a new card.
Otherwise, "ish kabibble."

you will experience problems when connecting to the new msn sites...as well...you experience locks ups...also there are about 20megs worth of patches already for xp...make sure u get them...

I have had a standard policy since the early 1990s: I do not install any new or upgraded Microsoft products until a minimum of 6 months after release. I have yet to regret waiting, and there have been many times I have been very glad I did. This appears to be yet another case where waiting for the maintenance release will pay off.
I don't begrudge Bill Gates his money, but I do figure that he really could afford his own guinea pigs.

I still don't get the fascination with AOL. To me, AOL is for someone who doesn't know a d*mn thing about using the Internet, and doesn't want to know.
I have NEVER used AOL, ever. I have watched my mother use it, and to me it was an abortion.

I installed XP pro about two weeks ago. It is without a doubt the fastest, most stable OS I've ever used. It's currently running on a PII 400 with 394MB of ram, and it's faster than 2000, NT4, or 98 on this machine. It handles my burner without any external software, and I love the new media stuff.
The installation was a snap. Although I admit I did an install from scratch.(I almost never do an upgrade--just asking for trouble.) and ME was the worst POS that Microsoft (or anyone else) ever put out. I tried it once, and removed it after about 4 hours. It sucked.

Just upgraded yesterday from 98 to XP. The install itself went OK, but I had to tweak things a bit. First is that
Zonealarm is not compatible, at least yet. Even after installing the supposedly XP friendly version XXXX.357, I
could not access the internet via my cable modem. Also, my computer forgot that I had a printer. I had to download
an XP ready driver and reinstall, and now it works. My Viewsonic E771 monitor is still stuck on 8 colors; I guess
I need a new driver for it too. Sigh. At least I haven't locked up yet. My old '98 was getting very buggy by the end.

and are skeptical about the hurried realease date that was bumped up a month.

I installed it last night, Took ~1 hour for the install, went smoothly. Just 1 glitch when it was trying to activate the software, the modem could not get a dial tone???? Went online after the install was complete and finshed activating it without any problems. Don't like the acivation feature, have two computers at home which means that to upgrade both will cost close to $200. MS does offer a additinal license for $89.
The install did clear up an problem the I was having with a delay with my modem when connecting to the internet. It looks good, seems stable and runs all of my programs. Except for the cost, I would give it an early grade of A.

Doing great! I am liking it so far. Very fast. But, I put it on a brand new machine that is nearly the top of the line. It also took me a short while to figure out where they put everything.

My computer wholesaler tried XP on several machines for about 2 hours. At this moment, he is flashing the bios to get rid of the copy protection, F-Disking, and reinstalling W2K. No machines he sells will have XP. XP is a dog that won't hunt.

MS Controlling the "Activation" of XP
For the first time, Microsoft plans to force families to buy a separate, full-price copy of Windows for each PC they upgrade. Each copy is expected to cost around $100. Not only that, but the company's method for enforcing this rule, a system called "product activation," requires you to let Microsoft create and store a profile of the configuration of every PC on which you install Windows XP -- even if only a single machine is involved. This profile allows Microsoft to "lock" each copy of Windows XP to one specific PC. If you don't allow Microsoft to collect this information, your copy of Windows XP will simply stop working in 30 days. And even if you comply, your copy of Windows XP might still stop working at some point if (like me) you make a lot of changes to your PC's hardware.

Office XP isn't a "must upgrade" for two reasons. First, if you're already comfortable with Office, there's no reason to break with your routine and spend more money. Second, this version of Office sports a hidden agenda that is less commendable than its interface improvements. It has a number of features designed to make it a launching pad for various paid Internet services Microsoft wants to sell, or help its business partners sell, over the next year.

Groups Push FTC to Act on MS XP, Passport
The Electronic Privacy Information Center and a coalition of consumer and privacy groups have renewed their calls for Federal Trade Commission action to protect consumers from the privacy risks associated with Windows XP and Passport. In a letter sent to the FTC, the groups criticized the FTC for not upholding its statutory duty to protect consumers in light of the planned release of Windows XP. So who here thinks the FTC is going to block Windows XP? Me neither. The other remedies requested (toward the middle of the letter) are interesting, though.

File Extensions And Monopolies
File extensions are one of the tools used by Microsoft to extend their mind and market share. It's a very simple idea but its honestly something most people have never thought about. Microsoft is keeping a more-vigilant eye on online auctions of old copies of Windows software, with people trying to offload it due to the upcoming release of XP. EU May Fine Microsoft
The Wall Street Journal reports about a leaked European Commission document, that suggests that the EU may fine MS for anti-competitive behavior. The fine can be up to 10% of the annual revenue, or $2.5 billion and may include the demand to remove certain programs from Windows. The report harshly criticized MS way of taking influence in the case, even speaking of trying to mislead the observers. Regarding the report of the WSJ, European Competition Commissioner Mario Monti said, that the case is still at a preliminary stage, since MS still has the right to defend itself at a hearing. Or in his own words: "To speak of a fine when Microsoft has not yet disputed the Commission's preliminary findings both in fact and law -- as it it's right -- is premature." Trade Group Asks British Government to Investigate Microsoft
Some of the UK's top companies are questioning Microsoft's policy on pricing. In an open letter to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, several of the top companies voiced concern at the cost of an extra £880m over a typical four-year investment cycle. No one from Microsoft has commented at this time, given the current state of affairs it's highly likely many companies will not upgrade or seek alternative cheaper solutions. Basically, a large trade group is asking the British Office of Fair Trading (akin to the FTC in the U.S.) to investigate Microsoft's price increases.
