********************How do you like WINDOWS XP?********************
From me ^ | 27 Oct 01 | Democrats are liars

Posted on 10/27/2001 11:16:24 AM PDT by Democrats are liars

Well, I just finished installing Windows XP on my computer. It did not go nice and smooth. I ended up reformatting my hard drive and starting from scratch. I know Windows XP sure does not like AOL 6.0. I am in the process of downloading AOL 7.0. I am still installing all my old software. Yes Windows XP locked up on me many times today and last night. Well, I guess I just would like to know how every one else is doing with Windows XP.

I installed XP pro about two weeks ago. It is without a doubt the fastest, most stable OS I've ever used.

You're kidding about "the fastest", right? I mean, any version of DOS is faster than any windows version ever made, including XP. And never have I seen a Windows operating system upgrade operate faster than the last. I would expect it to be more stable though.

Actually I don't mind ME. I keep the root directory fairly clean and reformat HD every 3 to 4 months and have very little trouble with it.

A buddy is getting the corp. version of XP and will give it a try. If it still takes control over vendor programs I use for my peripherals I don't think I will be interested. I am an old geek and I like using my older scanner/camera/cd burner programs.

And like I said it is just my opinion as I am a real "end user" and not very savy as many young folks are these days.

no. probably just the sexy desktop and the jazzed-up photo and music capabilities.

Not to start an OS war, but more than a few of us have refused to continue on the Microsoft perpetual upgrade train. Try installing Linux (any distribution) as a dual-boot system, then work with both for a while and see which you prefer. I think the chances are at least even that you'll like Linux better.

Amazing, a thread that asks what people think about Windows XP -- and you offer an opinion that everybody should use Linux. Thanks for the input.

I think you'd better look in a mirror when you talk about pushing religious beliefs.

Or maybe you should consider starting your own thread so that you can spread your viral Linux advocacy... The rest of us are discussing Windows.

How do you know windows 2000 is better? How long have you been using Windows XP (final version)? Shoot, it just came out a few days ago. I have been messing with Windows XP all day; I think I am going to like it. Its not perfect; but what is?

It's too bad it's not run on win2k. I notice everytime it gets busy the board goes down. Election night, impeachment, etc...

I guess you get what you pay for. And linux isn't truly *free* it ends up costing more in support costs than windows does.

JohnRob, care to clue this guy in as to what "busy" is??

I have tried to refrain from calling you an idiot, but you seem determined to spout your ignorant blather no matter what. Fine, so be it, but you OBVIOUSLY DON'T know what you are talking about.

The following is a list of groups that need a LOT of computing power. They seem to believe that LINUX works VERY well. BUT who are we to believe, scientists and computer science departments all over the world, or you???

Bush2000, before you aim your howitzers in my direction, I have NOT been talking down XP. With each release, Windows DOES improve.

I DON'T agree with their product activation scheme, but they are free to do things as they see fit. We should all be able to continue to keep making a good living supporting and using their products for the foreseeable future.

But I will NOT stand idly by while other OSes are being inaccurately talked down.

You got it all wrong...I have been using Win2k since day one maybe two, i am using 2k Pro and it proved to be quite stable next to Win98. Also did not have to make any attempts to register the OS before using it, like you have to do with XP.

Why are you "messing" whit it allday since is such a great OS as you stated. It took me a lttle over an hour to clean install w2k including all my business software, and have the machine up and running within 2 hours. Your statement "I think I am going to like it" does not sound very reassuring to me. In any case good luck on your project!

LOL. And I thought I had problems installing Linux...

You know that button that asks if you want it to overwrite your master boot record? Its usually a good idea to ask someone what that means before you try to do that on a dual boot system...

I never said Linux wouldn't work for large organizations. However, it isn't free to make it work right. That's why I referenced freerepublic being down during peak times. You have to have a super highly skilled person to manage it (not saying freerepublic guys aren't good--but the site was down).

Ever visit tpc.org? Who is the best whenever price is in the mix? Linux? Nope! Microsoft? Yes!

"XP...It's great. I can't imagine going back to the other OS's. Now if my apps/games wouldn't run on it I guess I would go back to the 9x line, but every single game/app I have runs just fine."

I've been using XP (home) for about 3 weeks, since it came on my new computer (I had not heard of it before). It's different than Windows 98, but that doesn't mean it's better or worse. One problem I've had is that the game "Black and White," which I have wanted to try for a while now, won't run on XP. I'm very disappointed. Everything else runs fine, though.
