Small Earthquake Shakes Manhattan

Small earthquake shakes NYC metro area By LUKAS I. ALPERT The Associated Press 10/27/01 4:57 AM NEW YORK (AP) -- A minor earthquake shook the New York City metro area early Saturday, knocking pictures off walls, breaking china and rattling the nerves of some still jumpy in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. A magnitude-2.6 earthquake hit under lower Manhattan around 1:42 a.m., said Dr. John Ebel, director of the Weston Observatory at Boston College, which monitors seismic activity in the Northeast. "That's more than a tremor. That's a small earthquake," Ebel said. At first police scrambled to determine what was going on, as 911 calls flooded in reporting shaking buildings and a booming sound, but there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, said Detective Edward Reuss, a spokesman for the New York Police Department. Calls came in primarily from Manhattan and Queens, a spokesman for the fire department said. About an hour after the quake, residents in the Astoria section of Queens were seen standing out in the street, some wearing little more than their bed clothes. One woman, Josephine Toscamo, said she was woken by a loud boom and the sound of breaking glass, as glasses in her china cabinet fell over, and lamps fell to the floor. "I'm a little shaken up so I'm going to spend the night at my friend's," she said. Meanwhile, recovery work continued uninterrupted at the site of the World Trade Center collapse. Carolyn Bell, a spokeswoman for the U.S.G.S., said no damage was expected, but the quake was felt into Long Island and New Jersey. The last significant natural seismic event to strike the city was a magnitude-2.4 earthquake on January 17.

That was no earthquake, Obubba Been Laiden pulled Livia Rodham's chair out from under her just as she was about to sit down.

It would have been funnier if I had said that it was a NYC Firefighter who had pulled the chair out from under Her Heinyness.

"A magnitude-2.6"

That is definitely an earthquake...not a tremor.

I was in LA on September the 9th when a 2.7 hit in Santa Monica about 1/2 an hour-45 minutes from where I was in Baldwin Hills.

It felt like a rolling pin was moving from left to right under the house.

No...not a tremor.

Good point, and a Dune bump to you. Do you like the new prequels by Herbert's son and Kevin Anderson?

Loved the book by Eco. But did you know that Michel Foucault is beloved by the campus neo-marxists? He's almost as big as Jacques Derrida (spit) and Nietche(sp?).

Ever since the clinton became senator nothing good has happened to NY. I think she needs to be recalled.

Tremor by CA standards, quake by any other standard. Look, any unusual occurence is apt to rattle NY-ers and quite rightly so.

Yep. A few days ago a scaffolding on a building being remodeled in New York collapsed. It killed several men. It also sent up a large cloud of dust that spread out to nearby businesses. People in those businesses, understandably, thought that New York had been attacked again!

That's probably more ominous sounding than you meant it to be.
