Eli Lilly is one of the major portions of central Indiana's economy. I have several friends who work for them. Not only are they a huge and very generous employer, but they contribute, through the Lilly Foundation, to many, many charities and institutions here, from the museums to hospitals to service organizations. The current CEO is a very nice guy who is gracious to salespeople and very unpretentious. This is a corporation all of us Hoosiers are proud to have.
Our governor has formed a terrorism task force (he's a democrat, so the first thing they do is form a committee to talk) and I am sure they are finding out how woefully we are prepared for terrorism.

I really enjoyed that Peggy Noonan article as I almost always do. (Does it seem like her articles are about 50% to long, though? Very good, but somehow stretched too much.)
One part that really got me thinking was about America's run of luck. I, too, feel that America has been lucky -- or blessed, to put it better -- but it's important to see that our blessings have often been a result of doing something right. Not exactly that we earned the blessings, but that we had good foundations which led us to not veer too far off the path that keeps the blessings flowing.
At that point in her article, I thought I detected something that is taken for granted by liberals, that we should feel guilty for what we do have. I don't want to feel guilty for anything I have, but want to be good and diligent to be thankful for what I have and to know what I'm doing to keep the blessings flowing so I don't stop that and can help others do the same.
It also got me thinking about something I wrote and posted here at FR back in January. I had this sense that coming to the age of the Clinton era America as in danger of running head first into the truth and being unprepared. I just thought that something would happen in America to make us wake up from our false sense of reality.
In case you're interested in reading this thing I wrote, here it is: A Message from China to America: "Brace Youself for the Truth"

So well stated. Talking about Govts, Jefferson Parish in La. has outlawed adopting black cats this time of the year, the satan bunch gets them and well, you know. Folks just don't know how well organized they are and how big their worship is. I guess you can say that the young folks who plays with this religion (which it is), plays with fire.

I know this witch doctor up around Hard Times, Ms. who has invented the cure for Anthrax, throw away all the mail you get.

You speak true words there. I wonder why people don't realize that you really, REALLY don't want to be calling up Satan, even if you are just horsing around.

Not only are the politicians and other government officials in high places totally lacking in terms of figuring out where we are and what to do about it, but a great percentage of the population is as well.
We as a people (not speaking of the very small percentage who are FReepers and thinkers) have been so led astray by the last administration and the media lap-dogs that we have almost fallen off the planet. There are millions of Americans, in my view, who have no concept of the severity of the situation, don't care because "it hasn't happened" in their small community yet and the value of their 401K is dropping "too fast".
What a wake up call this has been and some people pushed the "snooze" button.

You know, I am often amazed at the level of ignorance even among people who are supposedly educated. My sister who is a nurse spoke with other nurses at the hospital right after 9/11 and all they were talking about is airplanes and how that probably was the end of this. She started explaining about poisoning the reservoirs, bio-weapons, poison gas, etc. and they all just looked at her slack-jawed.
I once had an office manager who didn't know that Switzerland was in Europe.
Somehow we need to get people to understand that these events are NOT boring and that they need to understand what's going on!!

Thanks, SY. Very thoughtful comments from you and later this p.m., I'll get around to reading your link.
Oddly enough, popping into my brain as I woke today were similar ideas.
Your ideas also reminds me of a passage of Luke (6:48) we read yesterday in Bible study.
Jesus tells his disciples of the man who built his house on a firm foundation.
The flood still came, but the house survived.
As a country, we can only do the right thing. There are no guarantees that we will be free of troubles.

Jane , your account the other day of the Indy "Times" was shocking to me.
I knew the Roselyn bakery had closed in Noblesville, but had no idea why!
And the paper used to be conservative, after all it was owned by Dan Quayle's family.
So who investigates the newspaper????Hmmmm????
Well, I'm off for the morning, to return later this afternoon.

I'm sure you'll be pulling for the Yankees, right?

As a country, we can only do the right thing. There are no guarantees that we will be free of troubles. I agree! If our Nation is built on intelligence and morality, which I believe it is (in large measure), then we shall persevere and prevail!

It is
The Indianapolis Star, and they were once owned by the Pulliams. Dan Quayle's mother was a Pulliam. It used to be quite conservative, but the paper was sold to Gannett about 2 years ago. The editorial page is still fairly conservative, but the news section, like the
Wall Street Journal, operates from a decided left position.
They have an ombudsman column which basically says "You readers complain but you don't understand how ignorant you are and how we are going to do what we darn well please."
My grandfather was a pressman for that paper, my brother worked as an electrician for them, and my sister the art teacher once worked in their art department. They have changed, and not for the better. I am glad I cancelled my subscription. I have often said that if I won a big powerball prize, I would fund a competitive paper. I KNOW I would make money hand over fist, because there is a great deal of griping around here about the paper. Local talk radio is full of people who are disgusted.
I think, since I am not a wealthy person, I might write Rupert Murdoch to see if he might be interested. Ha!

I think, since I am not a wealthy person, I might write Rupert Murdoch to see if he might be interested. What is the deal with Rupert Murdoch? I know he owns Fox and I figure that's a positive comment about the man. But I have Australian friends, very conservative (kind of conspiracy types) who talk about Ruper Murdoch as if he's the devil personified. I'd like to know more about him, but in the meantime, I consider him a guy who knows a good business deal when he sees one. Fox was a can't-miss coming into the market that had nothing but liberals dominating and conservatives with no place to turn but radio.

MM: You're absolutely right about Eli Lilly. I worked for them for 10 years and sometimes regret leaving. My daughter works for them now (downtown) and I was so happy when she got on there. As an example of what they do for their employees, my daughter said that the first of this year Lilly celebratd their 125th anniversary. In honor of that, they gave EVERY EMPLOYEE 125 SHARES OF STOCK VALUED AT ROUGHLY $10,000! How's that for a nice gift and it didn't matter if you had worked there for 30 years or 2 days!
BTW: The Lilly foundation gave $30 MILLION to the WTC disaster fund.

I think Murdoch is basically a pragmatist. If the country started hungering for communist news, he would change Fox in a heartbeat. That is why I am always on their case if they goof something up or give Kristol much air time!! They need to know they only have us if they are fair and balanced!
My mention of Murdoch is because I am convinced it WOULD make money, and he has the money and experience to invest.
