I guess they've got no case. How are they gonna find moral equivalence with Spirow Agnew? Harding's closet was one thing, but was it just a measly Teapot Dome scandal after all? Just good old American cash-for-favors corruption... Dan Rather will find that a bore... or will he finally get it?

If I feel like roast chicken that I can pop in the microwave, the supermarkets in my area offer Tyson chicken. I'd rather starve than give my business to these crooks.

Maybe Purdue will publicize this report, discredit Tyson and thereby increase their market share?

Extortion? Nah! Tyson wanted the company and Tyson got the company, simple as that. How did he get it, that is the question. I tend to think he went to his "friends" in the government and "problems" just happened to arise with the Hudson Company's tainted meat, isn't that a shame, and Tyson was right there just in time to offer to buy the company and relieve them of their problems. Magically, all the problems just disappeared once Tyson took over. Funny how that happens, isn't it?

From the Smaltz report, there's lots of interesting stuff. It's really fun reading the Janet Reno letters. "No, you cannot investigate Tyson, your job is of limited scope. You must only investigate Espy." Smaltz writes her back, "But if I'm investigating Espy for taking bribes, I must have some authority to look into the people giving Espy the money, like Tyson." Janet Reno: "We appreciate what you're trying to do, and if you find any credible evidence against Tyson, write us a letter and then flush it, cause you're wasting your time sending it over here."

And here's a little tidbit on why the investigation took so long (there was also a great paragraph in there about how it took 40 months to get the White House to give them some of the documents they asked for):

The career prosecutors and agents in this Office, including those acting in an advisory capacity, were uniformly of the belief that there was more lying, perjury, and obstructive behavior in the investigative stage of independent-counsel cases than in typical white-collar cases. One can only speculate as to the reasons. One explanation may be that in independent-counsel investigations, witnesses often were individuals whose lives revolved around politics and who were used to answering questions in a glib, self-serving manner, often dealing with "shades" of truth. Another explanation may stem from the very nature of the crimes investigated by Independent Counsels. Public corruption is, after all, the elevation of self-interest over the common good, and the common good is nowhere better embodied than in the law itself. That high-ranking officials would put their own interests ahead of the public's by engaging in corrupt activities reveals an inherent disdain for the law. It should come as no surprise, then, if such self-centered disregard for societal strictures prompted lying to or otherwise obstructing an Independent Counsel whose principal job was to uphold the law to maintain the public's trust in its government.

It's probably too deep for the criminal bunch he was investigating to even comprehend, but this Daniel Smaltz really knows how describe the underside of a rock.
